Summary Of Mary L. Gavin's 'Emotional Eating'
Emotional eating is when people eat food as a way of dealing with feelings rather than eating to satisfy hunger. The article“Emotional Eating”, by the author Mary L. Gavin, is about how people use emotional eating without realizing how it is affecting their weight and their body. Emotional eating is often linked to events that happen in a person’s life whether it is a happy or a sad event. Dealing with emotions without the need to eat is a much healthier choice. Getting on a better track of eating healthy could mean to explore eating choices and finding replacements, writing down emotions that trigger your eating, and think before you go to eat. Emotional hunger compared to physical hunger stands between tending to eat more than usual and eating

Wendell Berry, the author of “The Pleasures of Eating”, claims that we, as a society, should know and care where our food actually comes from, to be able to realize that the food that reaches our tables has been through a ride that we may not necessarily like. He also encourages us to grow our own food and to buy our produce and fruits from a farmer’s market. I agree with the point that Berry is trying to get across. Making our own produce, fruits, meats, dairy, etc. is better because not only will we eat healthier and not be dependent on importing products but we will actually know what we are consuming. Sure making our own food is hard and it does take time, but there is no doubt that making it is better than faking it.…

Andrea Simpson suffers from Binge-Eating Disorder (BED), 307.51. There are several things about her case that make this clear. She has had periods of time in her life when she ate a great deal of food in a short time and she states that she would eat until she was uncomfortably full. When she was in college she never felt out of control during a binge—she always believed she would stop when she finished the piece of food she was eating. However, she reports that this seldom happened, and that usually she would continue eating, which indicates a lack of control.…

First in order to understand the physiological effects of eating disorders such as Anorexia nervosa (AN), there needs to be an understanding of the physiology of hunger in general. One aspect of hunger, has to do with feeling hungry due to the hunger pangs of an empty stomach. In a 1912 study by A.L. Washburn, Walter Cannon Intentionally swallowed a balloon. This balloon when inflated, was able to record Walter 's stomach contractions. While being recorded, the patient pressed a key each time he felt hungry. There was a direct correlation to the patients feeling of hunger, and to the actual stomach contractions. (Myers,474)…

In “Pleasures of Eating” by Wendell Berry (2014), the author focused on how eating should be considered as an agricultural act instead of an agricultural product. Berry (2014) explained the agricultural act as the awareness of the relationship between what we eat and in which conditions it is produced. Passive consumers and industrial eaters are the words Berry presented to define the ones who consume food without disputing the manufacturing process, the quality and the cost of the product. Furthermore, he claimed that the industrialization and politics of food degrade the quality of our lives since people are nourished expeditiously with low-quality, and cheap food. Berry emphasized on the food industry’s camouflaging strategy for the processes…

In The Pleasures of Eating by Wendell Berry, written in 1989 and published in the Center for Ecoliteracy, we are asked to question the things we do. The main audience of this article is for “City People,” otherwise known as people who use grocery stores like Walmart or Smiths. Our entire life we have become so accustomed to getting produce and groceries the fastest way we can, and the fastest way we get them is through a grocery store. We very rarely get food from the farm anymore and nobody questions why. We “city people” have become caught up in getting the cheapest food instead of going to the farm and getting the highest quality produce.…

In Chapter 1 of Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink, PH.D., the statement "We overeat because there are signals and cues around us that tell us to eat." is discussed. Wansinks main focus is on how cues influence each of the multitude of food decisions that we make each day. Cheeseburger, fries, and Coke, or grilled chicken, rice and veggies? Strawberries and yogurt, or pie and ice cream for desert? Munch on a snack while lounging in front of the television, or sip a bottle of water? As stated in the title "Mindless" Eating the cues that influence and direct these decisions are unconscious.…

Ever since I could remember, my family and I has always been struggling to survive‒ for my family mealtime has always been an event. No matter if it is just a small breakfast before starting school or a big feast to celebrate new years, for us, each chance you eat food it is more than just an act of nourishing the body; it became a chance to appreciate the world’s bounty. Starting in the late 1880’s Vietnam became an official colony of France, and after many decades of oppression it left the war torn country to rebuild from scratch. It was not until September 2, 1945 that Vietnam could establish itself as an independent country, luckily the country was infused with not only French traditions but also American influences, which was cultivated…

Over the years Americans have become passive consumers. The majority of our population consumes food without knowing what it contains or how the food is prepared prior to its distribution to the American people. The various selections we have in grocery stores, such as the availability of fruits and vegetables that were once unattainable year round, amaze many people, but what they do not know is that in order for this to be possible, products are genetically modified. Besides GMO’s, many products such as fruits and vegetables, which are said to be healthy, contain ingredients that are harmful to our bodies and farmers neglect animals until they are killed and used for food. Americans are ignorant and have allowed corporate America to give its people unhealthy, harmful food that will slowly kill those who consume it, therefore making America the sickest country in the world.…
