The movie I chose to watch for this assignment was Monster-in-Law. Jane Fonda plays a over barring mother who believes no one is good enough for her son. Jenifer Lopez plays the woman in question, who spends the entire movie fighting over her fiancé with her “monster in law”. If you haven’t seen this movie I highly recommend it. The relationship between the bride and soon-to-be mother in law perfectly displays competition management style. Marquis & Huston (2015) define the competing approach as “one party pursues what it wants at the expense of others” (p. 558). In the movie Jane Fonda makes the decision to move in with the couple temporarily, knowing that the daughter in law would not like it. One of my favorite parts of the movie is when Jenifer Lopez drugs her mother in law to get back at her for ruining her plans with her fiancé. This lines up perfectly with what is said in our textbook. “These win-lose conflict resolution strategies then typically leave the loser angry, frustrated, and wanting to get even in the future” (Marquis & Huston, 2015, p. 558).

I look at the conflict management styles that I do not fit into as somewhat negative and not something that I want to work on. One thing that would be beneficial for me to improve on is smoothing. “ Smoothing occurs when one party in a conflict attempts to pacify the other party or to focus on agreements rather than differences” (Marquis & Huston, 2015, p. 558). When I am working with someone who is unwilling to compromise, I tend to distance myself from him or her. Not to avoid the situation, but because I am unwilling to coddle someone to get them to see another point of view. One of my strengths is confrontation.
