The book related the story of a young girl, MIM- Mary Iris Malone, who discovers that her mom is sick. She lives with her dad and her stepmom in Mississippi whereas her mother is in Cleveland. She wants to find her and the book is about all the journey to get there: the people she met, the adventure in the bus and how she will succeed. There is however a running motto all along the book “Mim is not okay” and she really isn’t.
The main theme treated in Mosquitoland is the road trip but more than anything the search of oneself. In fact, MIM is trying to escape
from her actual boring life and to discover herself. The journey itself is quite an adventure and represent a wild ride for a young girl like her. However, in all these situations met, she will be brave and this will make her grown. After this road trip, she is a new girl with a new way of seeing the world.
During her journey Mim meets people that will leave significant impressions on her. Firstly she has been accosted by a teen boy, Walt, with Down syndrome. They will continue the trip together and he will become a surrogate little brother for her. The relation between them is a captivating relation because they have probably the same age but Mim takes care of him a way as he was part of the family. Then arrives the turn of Beck, a teen college boy who Mim crushes on. He will also join the journey to Cleveland and help them to get a car. Their story is touching because they are all lost and they support each other.
We talked about the character, but not precisely about MIM. Mim is simply indescribable. She is a hot mess but is really attaching at the same time. Sometimes you want to shake her and then to hug her. The way she thinks and writes provokes all kind of feelings: she made me laugh, cry, and then get hangry and finally made me want to meet her. She is a lovable little girl that the lector accompanies through her long journey to Cleveland.
The only thing that I didn’t like is the two types of writing: one is the story of what is actually happening to Mim, and the other one is written like diary entries in the form of letter addressed to a character named Iz. The kind of writing is dangerous because it can be taken as a collection of thoughts which is the case for Mosquitoland. Sometimes I got lost in her mind and forgot what happened in the story before.
To conclude, I would truly recommend this book. It made me travel in the USA but also in my mind. Mim is an attaching young girl in which the lector can identify.
