Summary Of Night By Elie Wiesel

Plot, characters, and theme page I read the novel Night by Elie Wiesel. It is about a young boy named Eliezer during the era of the Holocaust and is narrated through his words. He talks about his faith through the Jewish readings but is cut short when his teacher Moshe is deported. Moshe comes back and tells him the Gestapo shot them all down in a ditch and how he narrowly escaped. This sets up the story telling about the inhumane genocide of the Jewish people. After this, the Germans occupy Eliezer’s town of Sighet. Eliezer and his family with the rest of the Jews in Sighet are forced into ghettos to live in cruel conditions. They are then forced into cattle cars to be sent to concentration camps. A lady named Madame Schachter is heard yelling throughout the car about how she sees furnaces in the distance. This prophecy haunts the jews. They arrive at Birkenau and Eliezer and his father are separated from his sisters and his mother. He will never see them again. They then have to go through the many selections to see if they are fit for work or if they shall be put to death. The weak ones are sent to the crematorium where Eliezer passes and sees the open pit furnaces where they are burning babies. When the selection is over,
The novel was real and the horrors this boy had to go through will stick with me. The injustices people can do upon one another is unbelievable. This story illustrates the real horror the Holocaust caused upon millions of jews, gypsies, etc. They had been starved, beaten, humiliated, and had been witness to death. Death became a normalization to them and their tears became less and less everyday. I do not know how they went back to living their normal lives once the camps were liberated.
