Raku Ichijo's normal day for him becomes a little less normal when a girl named Chitoge Kirisaki lands on him out of nowhere and appears to be his new classmate. Raku and Chitoge immediately do not get along. She becomes very popular though, possibly because she is half-American and half-Japanese. Onodera Kosaki and she are the most popular girls in the school, but Raku has his eyes set only on Onodera and the girl from years ago. Raku hopes that Onodera is the girl he made the promise to; the promise is very important to him and he treasures the pendant he had been given. Raku finds out that he will have to have a "fake girlfriend" in order to prevent a gang war.
( Raku's family is the Yakuza.) Out of his surprise, Chitoge is the "fake girlfriend." Chitoge also comes from a family of gangsters. She is very reluctant at first but knows she has to do it in order to prevent a humongous fight. From this point on, the school recognizes Raku and Chitoge as an item, except for a very few people. In order to not give the wrong idea to Onodera, who secretly likes Raku, he tells her that it's a fake relationship. Only Ruri Miyayo, Shu Maiko, Onodera, and Chitoge know because they are Raku's friends, or just happened to figure out their
secret.
As the story progresses, Raku ends up creating hilarious and sweet moments with both Chitogi and Onodera on accident. He discovers that Onodera and Chitoge both have mysteriously shaped keys and wonders if any of them fit the lock on his pendent. Onodera has a crush on Raku, but she can't find a way to express it though she tries. Chitoge was looking through her old diary and read of a boy who always came to her rescue. She notices that Raku has a scar in the same place her old crush, " You Know Who", had.
The story ends from there leaving the audience curious of what happens next and who everyone's secret crush is. The author of the book is very good at making readers anxious with his writing style. The books bring much laughter and a sort of suspense which makes readers intrigued to read more.
