Love: Annotated Bibliography
Love could always lead to various outcomes. I feel like Rokujō is the most affectionate woman in the tale. She loves Genji with her truest heart, but Genji is very fickle in love, and his capriciousness makes Rokujō’s love turns into hate involuntarily. Rokujō is supposed to have a splendor life and live without any worries. She is intelligent and brilliant, and she is supposed to be the future Empress. However, everything has been changed after her husband died, and her affair with Genji turns her life into misery and tragedy.

She did not accept Genji’s love at the beginning, but everything has changed after she realized that she is actually love. Rokujō has been tormented by Genji’s neglect and indifference. “She herself, who suffered excessively from melancholy...and she spent many a bitter night, when he failed to come, despairing over her troubles.” (Shikibu, 60) Genji’s behavior makes Rokujō depressed, and the affair between Genji and Yugaō makes her feeling jealous. Her jealousy and possessiveness eventually make her own spirit possesses, and the spirit kills Yugaō and Aoi.

Rokujō’s jealousy is an outcome of her love towards Genji, and the jealousy destroys her soul ultimately. All the ladies in the tale are forbearing besides Rokujō, since she “fights” for Genji’s love. She seems to be the one who loves Genji the most among all ladies, but she is also the most deplorable character in the tale. She loves Genji to the depths of her heart, and the abhorrence emerges from the deepest of her soul. From her story, I feel like love not only could create happiness, but also could turn into

Sometimes Ruth May does something, or something happens to her that reflect something she thought would make her happy. When she first meets Nelson, the little boy who is helping them survive in Kilanga, he gives her a charm to keep her safe from death. To use it you just need to think if a safe happy place and when you die you will go there instead and be safe. Ruth May trusted her friend and when she believes she is dying because of the ants she thinks of where she would be happy and safe. “I know what it is: it’s a green mamba snake up in the trees. You don’t have to be afraid of them anymore because you are one. They lie so still on the tree branch; they are the same everything as the tree. You could be right next to one and not even know. It’s so quiet there. That’s just exactly what I want to go and be, when I have to disappear.” (Kingsolver 304) Ruth May see’s the green mamba as a sign of happiness. She thinks it’s something that means safety and happiness. When they find one in the chicken house, she doesn’t see it as particularly dangerous, but upon its exit the mamba proves that it is. “I could only stare at Ruth May’s bare left shoulder, where two red puncture wounds stood out like red beads on her flesh. Two dots an inch apart, as small and tidy as punctuation marks at the end of a sentence none of us could read.” (Kingsolver 364) The same thing that brought her happiness and that she didn’t see as a threat became her undoing. The same snake that was suppose to keep her safe killed her (AAAAHHHHH still mourning tbh). Ruth May act of happiness in believing that the snake would make her safe was what caused her to die instead of bringing people closer…

Love in one story can mean hate in another. In the story, The Love Suicides at Amijima, the characters Jihei and Osan, are cousins who marry not for themselves but for their family. In the ancient Japanese culture presented to us through this story, arranged marriages are done in their society, to protect family assets and to ensure family honor. Love is based off the character’s role or job as husband and wife, rather than the romance of it. Osan and Jihei were affected immensely as a result however. They did as they were told, to please their family. The love in this story does not seem important. Osan loves Jihei because he is her husband and that is what society tells her to do. Her love is dictated by family love and is not reciprocated by Jihei, who falls in love with another woman. In Oroonoko, the Royal prince, the story is drastically different. Oroonoko is a prince warrior meets Imoinda by chance and passionately falls in love with her from the first moment he sees her. The two are incredible in love with one another and try to do everything in their power to be together. However the King, Oroonoko’s grandfather also wants Imoinda and tries to separate the two. When he can’t have her the grandfather sends her away into slavery, separating the two lovers cruelly. This story is so different from Love Suicides because it shows love in a more pure and romantic light. When Oroonoko can’t have Imoinda in his freedom as a prince, he marries her…

Rostand uses Christian for a form of beauty that is almost like Roxane. Christian does not have a smart personality but he has believes beauty is in the body, he finds Roxane beautiful for her body not her personality or intelligence. Christian is affected by beauty in the play through how it hides his true personality which blinds Roxane into falling in love with him. This beauty is gone when Roxane realizes Christian is not as deep as he was when she asks him to speak his feeling and he can do nothing but say “I love you” “No, not again- I do not love you-“He shows he has no originality and Roxane starts to lose love for his actions and wants more words and meaning from him.…

Love is a profoundly passionate affection that you feel for another person. Why is everyone desperately looking for love? Well, love brings happiness and unforgettable memories in every human being, yet can also put you in difficult situations, such as the case of Janie Crawford. In the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” love is an important part of the story, therefore I want to focus on Janie’s point of view and what is the meaning of true love for her associated with pure innocence, communication and equality between the lovers where she seeks for the love of her life thought out the story.…

There are three stories that I loved in particular during this quarter. The Things They Carried, A Roman Incident, and A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings. These three stories carried a lot of emotion and excitement. They all have different plots and backgrounds, but for the most part, there are so much in common between these three stories in a psychological, socio/political, spiritual, queer, and feminist lens. Besides those examples, the one thing that connects these three the most is that the reader can find love in all of the stories.…

For some characters, love is a moral value right from the start. Zora Neale Hurston introduces us to Janie in her book, Their Eyes Were Watching God. Janie is a young, vibrant African American living with her grandmother. She marks the beginning of her need to feel loved and wanted early on in chapter 2 as she gazes upon a pear tree. “She was stretched on her back beneath the pear tree soaking in the alto chant of the visiting bees, the gold of the sun and the panting breath of the breeze when the inaudible voice of it all came to her. She saw a dust-bearing bee sink into the sanctum of a bloom; the thousand sister-calyxes arch to meet the love embrace and the ecstatic shiver of the tree from root to tiniest branch creaming in every blossom and frothing with delight. So this was a marriage! She had been summoned to behold a revelation. Then Janie felt a pain remorseless sweet that left her limp and languid.” (Hurston 11). Janie wants to feel the way the bee does when pollinating the flowers on the pear tree. The alienation process begins here.…

Another example that illustrates the question of fear or love can be applied to education. Throughout your school life you strive to do well and achieve good grades. You do this because you want to be successful later on in life and attain a good job. The fear of not being able to be accepted into a recognized university or having a good profession is what keeps you studying and paying attention in class. If your hard work did not pay off or there were no consequences to failing exams I honestly believe the majority of students would not attempt to do well in…

    Types Of Love And Spying

Then Terri said “He beat me up one night (170).” This form of love would be stated as Eros love. Eros love, in my opinion is the deepest form of love because it is an emotion and physical way of showing love. In the short story, What We talk about when we talk about love, Raymond carver shows this type of love in various ways. This form of loves also ties into any type of love that a spy believes they are showing. One occasion of a spy showing love like Terri and her ex-husband was the showing of James Bond in the film Goldeneye. In particular is the scene of Bond and Xenia. Bond is relaxing in a spa type of area and Xenia comes into the same room as him showing him a lot of sexual attention. Xenia is also a spy and in this scene she is doing this to obtain important information from him. They both kiss and fight until Bonds stops all of the nonsense. This scene validates the fact that a spy cannot be trusted or capable of love. Xenia went in the room for one reason which wasn’t to have a good time with Bond. Again this showed the form of Eros love, but it showed that a spy cannot love this deeply. It showed that a spy cannot care for someone as deeply as they care for their work. Another example from What We talk about when we talk about love is the relationship between the young couple. This young couple, Laura and Nick, were full of love because they just started…

    The Tale of Genji

Almost immediately the reader discovers foreshadowing which shows that women will especially play a large role in the life of Genji. Genji is referred to as “a beautiful son, jewel beyond compare” (4), which demonstrates how highly Genji was portrayed from an early age, and shows that if Genji was considered a fine man at this age, once Genji developed and his life progressed, women would figure prominently in his life. The beauty of Genji never really vanishes, as he has good looks throughout his entire life and as a result, never really has issues meeting women and having intimate relationships with them. Genji is not content to settle for just one woman, as he always searches for multiple women to satisfy different needs, each of who possesses their own unique qualities – qualities he cannot find in other women. Since Genji always strives for multiple partners, each woman throughout the tale plays a different role, and impacts Genji’s life and the story in a completely different way. For example, Aoi is the daughter of the Minister to…

I assume it would be like me trying to love a dog or couch as my significant other. When I think about it like that it sounds absurd to be able to love a woman back then like men are expected to today. I always thought the Japanese were highly honorable people but this tale makes me think otherwise. I have never seen such carelessness of other people’s feelings as Genji and the other men in this tale are to the women in their lives. They seem very selfish. For instance when Kashiwagi knows that Genji has discovered his affair with Genji’s wife, the Third Princess, he is literally physically sick because of it. Not because he has ruined the Third Princess’s life but because he is ashamed of Genji knowing he betrayed him: ‘I cannot face the world knowing that he…

Just as flowers need water to grow, Yūgao need a men to survive. However, it is not her own well-being, but her daughter’s, with which she is primarily concerned. She feels ashamed to lead a comfortable life without labor, since she is “deeply embarrassed by this clatter and clatter all around them of people rising and preparing to go about their pitiful tasks” (65). But she has to seek Genji, out of her love for her daughter and her responsibility as a mother. When Genji offers to raise Tō no Chūjō and Yūgao’s daughter, Ukon says [she does] not like to think of [the little girl] growing up so far out in the west of the City. [Her] lady left [the girl] there only because [her lady] had no one else to look after [the girl] properly” (84). Yūgao so eagerly seeks Genji partly because Genji is the dew essential to her daughter’s wellbeing.…

What is love? Is there such thing as "destiny" or "fate"? What does one mean by "100% woman", or a "perfect" man/woman? Since science still can't find answers to these questions, several love-story writers often play around with the world of love. They either attempt to provide an explanation for love, or use its "unexplainable effect" to create a story.…

My sentiment went to Zita, especially. Unspoken love is really terrible because one should assume a lot that would eventually lead to confusion and doubt and frustration. Zita, most especially is a girl and a girl usually assumes a lot. When she described her take when she and Reteche danced, “Reteche seemed so serious and so intent that she should learn quickly; but he did not deceive her, for once she happened to lean close and she felt how wildly his heart was beating.” Of course, when a girl like Zita falls in love, she would assume a lot even the unnoticeable details. XD I wish Reteche at least told her about his feelings (if there is even any).…
