Throughout the history of this planet people have been writing down their stories since the act of writing was invented. These stories can be viewed as good or bad based on the personal opinions of the people reading them. Most people think that bad stories are not helpful to their creators and reader, since they have mistakes in them. While good stories will help their audiences become better readers and writers. Based on the essay, “On Writing” by Stephen King, he views any time put into reading and writing will make you a good writer so long as you do it in large quantities. When people deem a piece of writing as bad there are a few reasons why they would think that way. There could be grammar and spelling mistakes or the plot and characters could be underdeveloped. Stephen King’s option on such writing was, “One learns most clearly what not to do by reading bad prose…” (On Writing, pg. 89). What he means by this is that reading poorly written work can teach you how not to write for future use. For example, if you read a piece of work that has spelling mistakes throughout it you’ll remember them later when you are writing something of your own.
