It was more of a challenge that I had not had experience with before and did not know exactly how to complete it. Submitting my own writing to a newspaper was pretty strange for me as I have never had anything published before. At first, I was not sure exactly how I needed to construct my Op-Ed for it to be accepted. However, it did become easier as I did more research on Op-Ed articles and learned more about how they are structured, what they usually contain, and what kind of tone they have. I learned that Op-Ed articles are pretty short in length and usually have brief paragraphs. They are not hefty academic texts that delve deeply into the subject. Instead, they are more opinionated, informal, and give a brief glance of the topic. Despite having more informal phrasing, Op-Ed articles still use statistics, quotes from authority figures, and data to support the authors' claims. Just like academic writings, Op-Ed pieces base their arguments on evidence. Without evidence, they would be completely opinion and therefore be far less convincing.
