Both methods of short story require both effort and creativity. Viewing a scene from one of Crewdson’s photographs is not very different from reading a flash fiction story. All of the elements of good storytelling exist within both mediums.
Another correlation between Crewdson’s work and flash fiction, is the sense of an ongoing story that exists beyond the small view. Any good creator leaves behind a sense of wonder and conversation. Regardless of whether the tale includes an open-ended nature, the structure of flash fiction and single photographs is such that small glimpses entice the consumer to want more.
Details are important. Flash fiction and single photography both rely heavily on details to inform the consumer. A visual feast is better than a hazy overview.
