Summary Of Praise Of My Bed
The best thing about poetry, is that is subjective. Everyone will always have a different point of view regarding each line and tone. In Praise of My Bed by Meredith Holmes is a poem that explains the solitude a woman is feeling. How empty her body and mind feels when she is apart of what most matters to her. The sensation of being unknown to everything she has ever known and how impossible is to recover from it. Because the hours keep passing and passing and still there is nothing that can be done to understand the unclearness of the situation; but still, fate keeps living within her soul and she is glad about it. For me, the poem runs within the atmosphere of a light-hearted and whimsical place where tragedies have its place but still, hope

Upon reading the poem, imagery can be found throughout the entire poem. For example, in the first two lines you can imagine a doll being put away like a dead child in a chest, you cannot bring a dead child back to life. This is the burial of her childhood only to keep her memories and carry them with her for the rest of her life. Also, the second to last line where she is “wound,” twisted, “like the guts of a clock,” referring to her stomach. She feels a sense of anxiety here. This is her final emotion to conclude the poem. She fears growing up because of the responsibilities she will have to take on, the shame she felt when her period started, will…

The true beauty of this poem for me, and what makes it so enigmatic, is the mutual recognition in a person, between two moments past and future, of one's frame of mind at the other moment. We are so long in time, that such connections are very, very rare, and to have a moment of empathy with one's future or past self is both to gain a momentary insight into the nature of life and aging, and to momentarily gain a new internal context to how we perceive the aging of others, and what it really means to…

Throughout the poem, the girl seems to have a particular style about the way she describes her father and what he means to her. This style sets the poems pace throughout the story. She seems to be the type of girl who is rebellious or does not open up to her father. Consequently, the relationship between the two grew extremely distant. Later in the poem, the father tries to connect and talk with the daughter, and she acts as though she was surprised they were even attempting to talk. The father wants to talk about when a man is dying—a subject that she never thought they would talk about (Gluck 319). She feels that this is at least a start for them, but she still is not sure why he wanted to talk about death. During the situation with her father, she continues to drift off and give details about the images she sees happening around her. She makes it seem that she is comparing what they are doing to what is going on around them.…

In her poem, she describes death as a bear in autumn, something bigger than herself, untamed and ferocious. In her mind's eye, death will buy her with gold coins and take her slowly and painfully "like the measle-pox." She sees death "coming like an iceberg between the shoulder blades," sneaking up and startling her from behind. Then she talks about being curious about what it will be like, wondering if it will be dark. Slowly it is as if she realizes she must not live life afraid and must grasp it and take nothing for granted. When she speaks of brotherhood and sisterhood she finds comfort in knowing she's not the only one living towards an end. She realizes that time doesn't matter any more, but what does matter is what she does, and how she lives out her life is what matters.…

She spent so much time focused on inconsequential details of things and sitting passively while someone else drove and steered her life, which is reflected in line 11, “he drove, steered”. During this period of her life, she felt discontent and not independent of herself, unable to have freedom nor do something more enjoyable. She works for someone else as he controls what they do, and she repeats the same tasks “over and over”. The use of constant repetition within the poem represents the monotonous feeling of her life. She was so immersed in the trifles of everything around her to entertain herself while she experienced an existential boredom, that she was unable to see anything apart from what was directly in front of her, leading to a lack of direction in her life or a view of what her future could be.…

The author's tone and placements of words ultimately set the mood and depicted the characters ability to handles loss. In One Art, the whole poem began with a lightened tone that set the tempo for the rest. Her constant repetition of “losing isn’t hard to master” or reminding us that “None of these will bring disaster” showcased her resilience. She never allows herself to be brought down by such grievances thus constantly building her character. The careful depiction of moving to another country was dictated by short and quick sentences.…

As the poem continues, the mood gradually lightens up. The author uses melancholy views of death to write a poem that is, in fact, about life and its beauty. She lists many things that she wants to achieve in life. Not material things, but personal things. For instance, when death comes to her, she wants to be able to say that she was "a bride married to amazement…taking life into [her] arms". She says, " I want to step through the door or curiosity, wondering: what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness." Here she states that although she does not want to dwell on the fact that her life will someday come to an end, it is perfectly normal to wonder about death.…

This poem really contains the main theme of the nature of people. She describes a stereotypical view that people do not take the time to appreciate and understand things. The poem honestly causes me a lot of confusion, which is why I picked it. I do not know how to get a full understanding of anything in this poem, especially things such as themes and allusions so I do not really have anything to say about either of those things so I am going to move on.…

The theme of this poem is about a father and son and their relationship together. When I read this poem for the first time I thought it was about parental abuse from all the negative words. After my analysis of the poem I then found out that it’s about a father and his son one night when he comes back a little drunk and they start dancing and the son wants to stay up and keep playing when put to bed. This is a happy poem even though there are some negative words in the poem, it makes you think back on all the great times you have had with your father.…

The poem helps show one woman's story of her sad love life. The author does a good way of showing this by telling us the feelings from even her husband's family members and how she felt everyone was against her, and she explained that she was removed from her friends, family and loved ones. Even when she thought she was making the right decision to move with her husband and his family, she soon found out more and more about abandonment, after he left her. The husband being seemingly unaware of the fact that his family isn't quite fond of his wife, or simply the fact that he is married to an exile. Throughout this entire poem she isn't happy she explains her sadness and loneliness in strong visual language.…

The poem discusses the funeral of a woman and how she is presented in her funeral as someone people would be more likely to romanticize than what she actually was, perhaps out of a misguided sign of respect. The other more hidden meaning behind the poem is the author's reaction to the women herself and how she is portrayed in almost a spiteful, angry way because of his anger over her wasting her life in gray dullness.…
