In the “Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, symbolism can be seen in the clove of seasons, the grindstone, and the color red. First, symbolism can be seen in the clove of seasons. According to the author on page one, the story says, “It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in the bleeding tree.” The clove of seasons symbolizes the period between life and death, like the time between summer and winter.
