Patrick Henry, in his Virginia Convention speech of 1775, encourages delegates to prepare for war against Britain. He urgently explained how peaceful protest is no longer an option. He uses rhetorical questions to create awareness of topics. He used rhetorical questions to create awareness of topics that help support his ideas of preparing for war. Henry says, “And what have we to oppose them?…
I have to say while reading about Tecumseh: Speech to the Osages it was very interesting to hear his point of view about a lot of things back then. And I like how he addressed everyone as brothers because what I get from the reading is that we are all equal no matter how we look. And they were saying that back then the white men were weak not very strong and the Indians help them and no they want to kill them instead of thanking them for what they did for them when they were down on their feet. All they want is peace they don’t want to be bothered. We have all come a long way.…
Patrick Henry’s argument on declaring independence on Great Britain and going to war was an inspiring speech that has shined a new light on the subject of whether to declare independence or stay loyal to a country that has done us more harm than good and has ultimately led me to become a rebel. I have become a rebel for two main reasons, our petitions that they have not noticed were an attempt at peace and the mistreatment from the last ten years. To start, petitions had not been productive whatsoever. When Britain had done something that had made us miserable, we decided to meet in the middle and make peace with Britain though petitions. Unfortunately Britain had ignored and disregarded us and our petitions, and instead, had sent us harm and…
Thank you for your insights. As for Aeschines’ speech against Timarchus, Aeschines tries to bring Timarchus to account about why he blames the city, and its laws and regulations by saying to him “You will see, then, that Timarchus cannot blame the city for any part of this prosecution, nor can he blame the laws, nor you, nor me, but only himself.” Through Aeschines’ verbal attack over Timarchus, we can question why Aeschines defended the city and its rules and laws against Aeschines’ claims. Were Aeschines’ claims fake or false?…

Throughout the speech Tecumseh uses metaphors to humiliate and show what kind of man the British General truly is. Tecumseh says things like “our father’s conduct to a fat dog, that carries its tail upon its back, but when frightened, it drops it between its legs and runs off”. By stating this Tecumseh declares that the British General is a wimp who cannot keep his word.…
When George Washington exited office in 1796, he delivered a speech to the people titled “President Washington’s Farewell Address.” This speech was not only created to inform the people of Washington’s leave from presidency, but also caution the people of what could happen if they didn’t heed the warnings Washington gave them. For example, Washington states that, “..the batteries of internal and external enemies will be most constantly and actively (though often covertly and insidiously) directed…” (Washington, line 18). You could say that in a way, Washington was telling the people of America that they needed to appreciate their freedom and fight for it, because along the way, people will try to take that away from you. As a former general,…
“We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne; and we have implored its interoperation to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament.”…
The most notable aspect of his speech is the repetition of the word “brother.” It begins every new section of the speech, and serves to create a calmer feeling towards those to which he was speaking. It shows respect and honor, which can sway the opposing side to his side. This was also present in Tecumseh’s speech to the Osages in a rally cry against the white people. Red Jacket’s case, however, was a proposition of peace, not war. He is merely trying to win the respect he felt his people deserved as a dignified, intelligent, wise, and emotional society. By using the term “brother,” he is acknowledging not only the individual respectfully, but that every one of the white race, no, all races, are equal to him and his tribe, and therefore, deserve the same respect. By this assumption he is humbly, cleverly if you ask me, placing upon the listener, he is forcing them to listen to his proposition, even if it’s just to be polite.…
“If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter”. George Washington served most of his life in the Military and lead the Continental Army to multiple victories which had an enormous significance in getting France involved in the war for their independence. However, Washington wrote his “Farewell Address” at the end of second term of his presidency stating that he will no longer serve as the president of the United States America. But why? Was it due to the fact that Washington just didn’t have the time he used to have and needed some rest? Or is it because of his age? Truly, we will never know why but we do know that age was a factor in his choice. Washington became ill more often and…
Abraham Lincoln begins his second inaugural speech on March 4, 1865, in which he addresses the nation on the ongoing civil war and his high hopes to unite the nation once again under God. Lincoln began his speech by saying that the war has taken so much time and energy out of the country and that there is no need to report on it. He declares himself an equal with the public and says he has also felt the wars effects. “The progress of our arms…is as well known to the public as to myself.” He states that he isn’t going to attempt to predict the war but he expresses his hopes for the future and encourages the public to be optimistic as well. Lincoln looks back four years prior to his first inaugural address. He says we were all awaiting a civil war but were hoping to stop it and save the Union. However, insurgent agents hoped to divide the Union. Lincoln says one party would make the war and the other would accept it.…
In her speech, Tahmineh provides some examples of why she believes Rostam is a hero. (1.) When she says "But like a legend I have heard the story of your heroic battles and your glory, of how you have no fear, and face alone Dragons and demons and the dark unknown." (2.) Tahmineh also says "Of how you sneak into Turan at night and prowl the borders to provoke a fight." (3.) Tahmineh admired the warrior inside Rostam when she said, "when warriors see your mace, they quail and feel their lion hearts within them fail…
The War of 1812 has brought immense pressure among Madison to unite and inspire the nation to fight together and in addition to reflect the U.S as a strong force among others. James Madison, fourth president of the United States, was widely viewed as introverted as well as respected for his intellect. In 1813, during the midst of the War of 1812, Madison delivered his second inaugural address to the white men in America eligible to vote. During 1813, Madison is addressing a nation divided in a time calling for unity and harmony. Madison thoroughly expresses conflicts of the war between the British and Indians as wells as how America is being perceived by other nations. Through the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, organization, and diction Madison…
Directly addressed to a man named Leuconoe and the origins of the famous phrase “seize the day”, Horace’s speech argues the importance of living in the present moment while treating the future as nonexistent. He stresses the fact that humans cannot control time or know what the future holds. Therefore, Horace orders Leuconoe to enjoy life as if today were the last day, for he does not know if he will have tomorrow waiting for him to take action.…
“Four score and seven years ago…” that is the start of Abraham Lincoln’s most famous speech “The Gettysburg Address.” Abe Lincoln was a benevolent man and he did marvelous things for our country as a whole. He was the 16th president of the United States. He also freed the slaves, and ended the Civil War. At the end of his term he was assassinated, but I’m sure you already know all this, so let’s talk about some stuff you might not know about Abraham Lincoln.…
