Feminists suggest that domestic violence is a problem of patriarchy. In particular, research indicates that men's view that women have failed to be 'good' partners or mothers is often used to justify attacks or threats. These gendered expectations may be particularly reinforced is a woman goes out to work and earns more than her partner. Many boys and men are still brought up in traditional ways to believe that they should…
According to Torr’s and Swisher’s Violence Against Women, women still currently experience the dangers of domestic violence that many other psychologists and medical professionals have stated daily. In a male dominated world, women do not have the confidence or self-esteem to stand up for their rights and have a voice in government. Many girls and women from ages as low as under 12 to as high as 44 experience domestic violence during their lifetime in a ratio of 1:3 and only 20% of the women who are abused by their spouses report their incidents which have proven to be more dangerous than diseases, injuries, and wars (Torr and Swisher 110). Many reasons for men’s hostile behaviors towards women include the belief that males are the sole…
“Surely you aren’t going home alone at night? Someone should walk you home.” These phrases are probably often heard when planning to go home in the dark, at least when you’re a woman. Girls are constantly told by their parents or social environment that it’s not save at night for them. Walking alone is thought to be out of question. But doesn’t it seem strange that women should adapt themselves to the behavior of men? Women are way too often blamed or partially blamed when being victim of rape or other sexual assaults. This is an example of victim blaming, a psychological phenomenon were the victim is held responsible for the crime that was committed against them. So why does our society blame our victims? It is an ethical phenomenon where gender roles are related.…
Portrays the female victim as innately weak and oppressed, particularly in honor based killings or domestic violence who is seen as oppressed by their partner…
Sexism is the root of many evils. Sexism encourages women to take jobs that often do not make men question how powerful they are. Women who back down from challenges that men set are this powerful in a workplace are what drives sexism. When women decide to live up to the challenge they are faced with harassment, lower pay wages, and gendered discrimination. When men are this powerful in a workplace they take that power and exert it at home. This leads to the evil of domestic violence and even rape. Julia Alvarez addresses the couple of societal evils, sexism and domestic violence.…
Radical feminists help explain why abuse patterns are concentrated around women and why they are more likely to be victims of abuse by men. Kate Millett and Shulamith Firestone argue that all societies have been founded on patriarchy; men are seen as the oppressors and exploiters of women, for radical feminists widespread domestic violence is inevitable in a patriarchal society and serves to preserve the power men have over women, they see male dominance over institutions as the reason police and courts are reluctant to deal with cases of domestic violence efficiently. To explain why most domestic violence is committed by men radical feminists argue that…
Our culture has had an influence on individuals’ awareness and reactions, or lacking thereof, to incidents of domestic violence. The average individual has a conditioned brain to not associate normal feelings surrounding violence and harassment when a woman commits domestic violence against a man. One may actually find the situation comical at times. In relation to media, there is a low frequency of women hitting men or being the aggressor on television shows or movies. Based on the perception of domestic violence and the actual statistics of it, this culture is creating an environment with a major double-standard. Society is highly aware of violence from men towards other men yet when seeing violence from men towards women it is regarded as a serious matter, never comical or innocuous; it is seen as deadly. Therefore, the effect of this double-standard likely increases the chances for women to be violent in relationships while it is overlooked by the media, the general public and by activist who study the matter of domestic…
As a woman, I most definitely agree that we are often the receivers of violence from dominant groups like men, and are often expected to be okay…
Females are underestimated to be vulnerable targets of sexual assault because of their gender and physique, according to a report "women and girls are the vast majority of sexually abused victims: nearly 1 in 5 women – or nearly 22 million – have been raped in their lifetimes, majority of the abuses being unreported" (Black, 2011). Through the viewpoint of a liberal feminist, men’s use of sexual force needs to be understood as a means of oppression and appropriation given by all men in order to subdue the fear of women; alongside it is the expression of male property rights over women (Domenico, n.d.). Similarly, females are constantly victimized as the main targets of intensifying sexual assaults. A stereotype would be "victim blaming", if the victim does not directly refuse/behaves flirtatiously and encouragingly/consumes alcohol/dresses provocatively/has numerous sexual partners it is assumed that ‘a female is at fault’ for showcasing her privilege to indulge in human activities (Hilt, 2014). “Unreported sexual assault [is] reconceptualized as a mechanism for maintaining male…
The British Crime Survey (BCS) provides evidence on victimisation experienced by men and women. They have identified that men are at greater risk of victimisation than women, according to victim surveys, in 2004/5 the BCS reported that women aged 16-24 had a 6.3% chance of becoming a victim of violence compared with a 14.6% chance for men of the same age (Jansson 2007 as cited by Newburn 2007). However, it has been found that ‘domestic violence’ is the only category of violence that women are at a 0.5% greater risk than men (Nicholas et al 2005 as cited by Newburn 2007). Although victims of ‘stranger violence’ were found to be 2.3% of males in comparison to 0.6% females, this range of statistics suggests that perhaps men and women fall victim to specific types of crimes based on the social stereotypes and…
One form of gender based violence is sexual assault. Sexual assault is any inappropriate sexual touch by someone who was not given the right to do so. Women are by far more likely to be a victim of sexual assault then a man is. Sexual assault happens all over the world. In the state I live in, sexual assault is the second highest crime committed by criminals. There are so many sexual assaults that go unreported. Women fear of retaliation, people would blame them, and embarrassment. In the state I live in, sexual assault is tiered into 4 degrees; 1st degree, 2nd degree, 3rd degree and 4th degree. The degrees are tiered based on what act the criminal performed. 1st degree has the highest penalty…
The feminist criminological theory aims to understand minorities in race, gender socioeconomic status and many more and their intersection with one another and their relation to crime. In relation to interpersonal violence and gender, females are greatly underrepresented in studies- particularly regarding those who commit offences. As mentioned above this places a pressure on the legal system that does not know how to properly respond to these women. Feminist theories aim to bridge the gap between males and females in the criminal justice system and provide gender appropriate crime responses for all. Furthermore, breakthroughs discovered in feminist criminology regarding female crime and victimisation may assist in explaining male crime to some extent. Since feminist theory looks at all female crime and victimisation- including crimes involving males- reasons as to why males become victims of female assault and why they assault females are…
Domestic violence has been framed to be understood as a women's issue, while men are often overlooked; making this a social conflict in our society. When we think about domestic violence, we think of women who are battered by their husband, boyfriend, or a man they used to involve with. However, every year in the U.S. about 3.2 million men are the victims of an assault by an intimate partner. Most assaults are, though many are more serious and has ended in homicide in some cases. About 15% of men are victims of reported intimate partner violence. Women who abuse men are not much different than their male who abuse women. Men can be hit, kicked, punched, pushed, or bitten by women abusers. Women also use weapons such as knives, guns, or other objects just as men do.…
Even though men and women commit crime and are victims of the same, women tend to be more affected by this breed of coward men that like to establish their power and authority by abusing women. In recent years, we have seen as a country how the way people think is slowly evolving towards acceptance and female rights. Recently, gay and lesbians have been acknowledged in society, given that they were discriminated by the same society that today gives them a hand. Women are also more empowered than in prior years; today we see that our females are more in control of everything at work, at home, television, sports which was a male-dominant industry, even this year we had a female running for president named Hilary Clinton which goes to show us all that women are a growing powerhouse that is ready to take on important…
