1. In the book A Separate Piece, I understood and connected with both characters very well. The character I would say I sympathized more with is Gene. I sympathized more with Gene because Gene had a lot of the same feelings in the book that I have. An example In the book is when Gene thought that Finny was trying to draw him away from his studies so that he wouldn't be the head of the class but was never really doing that. I can relate because sometimes I feel the same way that people are trying to make me drift away from the things that really matter to me.
2. In the story, A Separate Piece the tree that they had their meetings at and they jumped off was very important for the growth of Gene. In the beginning
of the book, Gene was timid of jumping off the tree into the lake. The tree was basically not allowed to be jumped off unless it was part of the training at the end of their last year. Finny jumped off the tree first so Gene decided to do it too and they would jump off regularly after that. That tree was so important because it taught Gene to conquer his fears and it also cause the downfall of Finny and Genes relationship after Finny broke his leg.
4. Gene means by that statement that he never went into battle he never fought in the real war but fought in the war against himself. At the beginning of the book Gene was younger and had much less experience. With the help of Finny, Gene overcame a lot of fear and self-dought. When Gene explains that he killed his enemy, he means that he killed his enemy within himself and became a better person.
