When a person gets an injury how they themselves will show how the injury will heal. For example, when a person gets a wound on their body it should be treated or an infection will be created. An infection is similar to the mind and body. If a person does not have a healthy thinking mind the injury will get worse. The mind should be treated just like an infection should. In the story when Ivan “made a false step and slipped ... only knocked his side against the knob of the window frame. The bruised place was painful but the pain soon passed” it is explained that he injury Ivan sustained was minor and the pain passed over (Tolstoy 24). As Ivan’s pain began to feel worse the “quarrels between husband and wife became more frequent” the connection between Ivan’s life and his pain goes hand and hand. As Ivan’s injury was getting worse his mind began to stress out which made his health deteriorate. Ivan’s wife realized that “he fell into such a rage at the beginning of dinner that she realized was due to some physical derangement” this supports that his mind angered him around the time his injury was painful (Tolstoy 29). When the mind is going through any time of stress or negative feelings it can affect the body in a painful way. When an injury is present the pain in the mind will make the injury worse.
