“The Red Convertible” “The Red Convertible” by Louise Erdrich is a story of two brothers who are native Indians that live in a reservation. Lyman and Henry are very close. They purchase a red convertible together, which they both cherish. The main character in the story is Lyman Lamartine, narrator and protagonist. Lyman is the lucky younger brother who is great at making money. Lyman Lamartine proved to be a character, which readers can look up to. At the age of sixteen Lyman had already owned his own restaurant. “After I’d owned the Joliet for
one year, it blew over in the worst tornado ever seen around here…. but before I lost it I had every one of my relatives, and their relatives, to dinner” (par 4), Lyman is always thinking about his family and that is a great characteristic to hold. Henry on the other hand was not so lucky and was sent to the Vietnam to serve for three years. Before Henry leaves he gives his car keys to Lyman in case he weren’t to come back home. "Thanks for the extra key. I'll put it up in your drawer just in case I need it", Lyman says to his brother. He doesn’t want to entertain the idea of losing his brother at all. Henry is Lyman’s best friend and he’d do anything for him. When Henry comes back from war, after being captured, he is no longer the person he use to be. This saddened Lyman. He will go to great lengths to get an emotion out of his brother again. Lyman destroyed the very same car he maintained in pristine condition in his brother 's absence in an attempt to bring his older brother back to life. Lyman recounts the events of his relationship with his brother and the good times they shared with the red convertible, and the downfall of their relationship after his brother changes from three years of military service. Lyman is a caring man and would do anything for his family. He is thoughtful, kind and has a great personality. Lyman is a role model and holds characteristics that are hard to find.
