Kara Westfall, the 5 year old, devastated without her mother, with only her low-life father and her newborn baby brother Taff, is convicted with the worst crime, witchcraft. Kara is taunted for years after until she finds a part of past. She also discovers that she is a witch. It is up to 12 year old Kara Westfall to protect the citizens of her teon against the other evil witch.
The antagonist of the story, Grace Stone, was always mean to Kara, for her Father is the one that killed Kara mother. But later, Kara drops the grimoire, the book of spells for the witchcraft and Grace discovers it. Grace realizes that she is not only a witch, but a better witch than Kara. They battle to the death but Kara wins.

The island is very poor wit5h little knowledge about richer countries. The time frame is from many years because there is no advanced technology or even running water throughout their village. Also the people of De’Norn believe in witches, shunning them. This also proves that this took place thousands of years ago, for witchcraft is from the 1700s.
An extremely important place in The Thickety, is the Thickety. The Thickety is a dark forest full of unwanted creatures. Once you go into the thickety, it gobbles you up into the unwanted world. This is also where Kara’s mother hid the grimoire and where Karas finds it. She finds the grimoire after seeing horrifying creatures through the darkness.
