Summary Of The Shape Of Things By Neil Labute
The Shape of Things by Neil Labute follows the story of a student working on their final Thesis to finish their MFA in Art. Her medium is a guy named Adam. They start dating and she uses passive manipulation to mold him into what society would see as an “improved” version of himself. Ultimately, asking him to give up his only friends, and displaying her piece of art to the world while simultaneously turning down his offer at marriage. Adam’s super objective is to love and feel loved so that he could be happy. This objective aligns with pretty much every choice he makes. First by asking Evelyn out, then by doing so much for her just to make her happy, and then finally by asking her to marry him. It’s all in a vain attempt to love and feel loved. Of course, his main goal with his actions are to make her happy, but I believe that’s because in his eyes her happiness is his happiness. Evelyn’s super objective is to make great art to get a good grade. I think she does a good enough job explaining this herself, but here it goes. Her professor told her to “Strive to make art, but change the world” (75). She took this to a new extreme and decided that the best way to fulfill her professor’s wishes would be to change someone’s entire life. In order to change how the world saw them, and in order to change how they saw themselves. In the admits that there …show more content…
Throughout the show I would slowly change my physicality starting from an awkward and low stance centered in my head most likely until ending in a much more powerful and confident stance centered in my chest. Though, I would likely change it a third time into a defeated and/or confused stance for the ending. My vocal quality would likely change from timid to confident to lost in the same pattern as my physical qualities

Sykes analyzes two stories in which the artists ( the protagonists) were unsuccessful, because “For neither writer was the role of artist a major preoccupation,” rather both characters took as an ultimate goal personal aspects. According to Sykes, in order to achieve the goal of the arts, the artist should divide the arts of the other aspects to “honor the autonomy of the arts and win through to the goal of beauty that is the art´s telos.” (Sykes) This way, the arts can be corrupted by external purposes, that instead of expanding the beauty of the arts, disrupt the discipline itself. However, this concept can be applied beyond the arts realm, the lack of concentration of the ultimate goal can disturb a certain…

The author suggest that we ask ourselves: “What is the purpose of this work of art (and what is the purpose of art in general)? What does it mean? "Art is not the application of a canon of beauty but what the instinct and the brain can conceive beyond any canon. When we love a woman we don't start measuring her limbs." (Pablo Picasso, 1870) When one looks at a piece that they believe to be art, they stare, they admire, they criticize and then they move on to the next piece. Not everyone will say that the same thing is art, just like not all people believe rap is actual music. Art is what you make of it; it's what's inside ones soul. Himillsy, in The Cheese Monkeys by Chip Kidd, followed her own soul in everything including art, and taking anyone she felt worthy enough along for the ride. Himillsy Dodd takes art because she can. She drops the classes the teacher is ‘too hard' or…

Therefore, she fights this oppression by destroying the wallpaper at the end of the story. When she finally tears the paper, she feels delivered from her sense of being…

We, of all people, must be very careful not to allow ourselves to stagnate in any manner whatsoever—mentally, artistically, or physically. To be an artist means to grow. An artist can not afford to do anything else. To stand still means, paradoxically enough, to go backward, and for an artist that is fatal. To keep on growing means the constant necessity for getting a correct perspective of ourselves. We must stand off, so to speak, and look at ourselves through very critical glasses. If we once lose our perspective we lose all.…

I never used to write. In fact, I didn’t much like it. Little did I know that writing would become obsolete and a physiological requirement for the well being of my life. From an early age on all I did was read. I grew up in an isolated environment where books were my escape, and escape was necessary from the hardships of home. I remember being a young seven-year-old boy wearing a pillowcase around my neck fastened with a pen. I was eating animal crackers at the time, and my step dad was calling out for me. I stood up from my crouched position and raised my hand as I learned from pre-school, and said, “ I’m here daddy.” At that moment my step father grabbed me by the cape harshly compressing my trachea purposefully, shaking me back and forth with his hands around my neck as I began to choke on the appetizing cracker animal crumbs within the back of my throat. I didn’t understand at the time what was really going on. My mother came out of the room and my dad acted as if nothing happened and told me to…

Art is a curse that will grab you once you're hooked and hold on to you for the rest of your life. Art doesn't hold people’s hands through the rough patches, of course; she makes them work for it. If someone thinks that art is easy then they have another thing coming, because art doesn't kiss on the first date. Art had forced me to confront the emotions that I was not ready to confront. I have met jealousy through other artists’ artworks and I know frustration through mine. I become frustrated and blinded by my work when I am unable complete it because I can’t translate the image in my head to the paper on my easel, and there is so much that I wanted to say through my art, but my hands can’t seem to work right.…
