For example, in the first section of the book Charlotte could not trust her own fathers plans. The plans were for for Charlotte to get on the ship with two other families and travel to province. The two families did not show up. One family had and sick kid and the other could not make it. When Charlotte found about this very bad news. She mad and scared because she was going on a ship with all men and she was the only girl. This supports my theme because she couldn't even trust her blood her father, with the plans he made. As the story went on Charlotte not wanting to but went on the ship. This scene was in chapter 1. …show more content…
As shown in novel, Captain Jaggery was finding his way to Charlotte's trust, Charlotte on the other hand was making a new friend that was on the crew.
His name was Zacharia, Zacharia told Charlotte how bad of a man the captain was, but she did not believe what he said. She thought that he was a good man and would never do anything bad to hurt her. The captain thought of Charlotte as a good girl and would never disrespect him. Just when Charlotte and Zacharia get closer. The captain finds Charlotte's trust and Charlotte breaks it right in half. He chooses Zacharia to whip but he picked him for a reason. The reason was that he was the eldest man on the ship and the captain needed a younger set of hands. There is a twist, Charlotte angers the captain by saying he should not whip Zaccaria and Charlotte whips the captain across the face. The captain lost Charlotte’s trust because she disrespected him. This scene is in the 2 part of the
book.
Also in the 3rd part of the novel, Charlotte tries to prove herself to the crew by climbing the royal rope if she succeeded she would have to do that 50 times a day. When the captain asked charlotte to go cut the bow spirit because there was a big storm coming there way. When she comes down from the bow spirit, the crew finds Hollybrasses body. The crew and captain blame the murder on Charlotte. Charlotte lost the crew and captains trust. She was sent to the jail of the ship till the court date was set then she would see what would happen fro their.
The last example that shows you never know who you can trust is when charlotte went to the courtroom Charlotte lost Jaggery’s trust again. When they started the debate the captain kept saying things that made the judge think that it was Charlotte but it was not. He was bringing up things that Charlotte did and twisting them to make the judge think that she was the murderer. She was basically forced to say yes. Charlotte lost Jaggery’s trust because he kept making her look bad and putting her in a position she can not get out of . This was located in the novel in the last few chapters.
To sum it all up, the theme in this story is you never know who you can trust. I have shown multiple examples from the novel. The examples I have shown throughout my writing prove that you never know who you can trust.
