Summary Of The Worst Generation Of Our Lives By Ehrenreich
Watching T.V is ironic, since you sit there watching a fictional character live their life, getting things done in complete contrast to yourself. Why would you enjoy someone else doing day to day activities you yourself could? Ehrenreich makes an argument in her work The Worst Generation Of Our Lives, that it is eerie and somewhat puzzling in the way fictional characters are depicted to be realistic humans but are rarely shown watching T.V. Often those on T.V are supposed to be realistic portrayals of people. Which eerily implies how T.V shows are taking away the realism of our life, how we are soon becoming fake personalities just sitting there. I agree with Ehrenreich that people spend too much time watching T.V because it robs you of your time and limits your productivity. Specifically T.V is lowering the quality of life by …show more content…
They would watch a famous T.V personality playing videos games, occasionally yelling, screaming, and crying with the personality. My cousins and friends often watch the journey it takes to finally the game along those that stream the shows. The reason why watching another person press buttons on a controller is so popular is because watching other accomplish something be it inside a virtual reality can make you feel as if you did yourself leading to a sense of happiness caused by dopamine in your brain. In addition, you feel as though you play along the gamer making it feel like an “experience shared with a friend.” Yet, it’s basically switching out a pill of vitamin C for an entire orange. Basically, society misses out on the holistic perspective of accomplishing something, the hard work gone unnoticed, and soon the reality of having no one besides you chomps at your heart. Creating a form of addiction, trying to cure a feeling of apathy and emptiness by repeatedly watching T.V to awaken the same feelings to the point of

Television has evolved tremendously through time. It has become a go-to source for most Americans. In the passage, “The Worst Years of Our Lives”, by Barbara Ehrenreich, she considers modern people as “couch potatoes” and that television has turned us into “root vegetables.” Ehrenreich does make a point about American people becoming lazy; however, comparing us to fictional characters on TV is questionable.…

The “television” has been around for many decades, just consuming each person who takes notice to it. For the audience who watches television “day in” and “day out” they would become induced with what society portrays as righteous and imitate what they see (Ehrenreich). Ehrenreich states Americans will “begin to notice something eerie and unnatural about the world” meaning after watching hours of television Americans then would think of the world as mysterious and bizarre.…

“So why do we keep on watching [Television]?” challenges Barbara Ehrenreich in, The Worst Years of Our Lives. Ehrenreich alleges that television “has transformed the American people into root vegetables” (2-3). Television as we know it is a way to escape the troubles of the real world and enter into a sense of fantasy. People sit for hours watching television which is harmful and may brainwash people to believe what they are told. Television was never invented to exemplify the real world; it was merely a distraction in the path of our trajectory. However Ehrenreich classifies modern Americans as couch potatoes simply because they do not accomplish anything that is displayed on television. I disagree with Ehrenreich’s assertions about television because she assumes everything portrayed in television is danger and thrills. Much of what is advertised on television is informative and important in society.…

It’s filled with shows that have no meaning or lesson behind it. However, it still manages to bring happiness into people’s lives. TV is something people look forward to after coming home from a long day. Research shows that, “We’re cheered by the sense of progress, of things are moving forward. That’s why it’s satisfying to see the seasons change; to watch children grow; and to clean your closets.…

People all over the world turn on their television each night and watch a few moments to a few hours of television and it is hard to miss a reality show which on almost any channel. If they were to pause on one of these shows they might not know it but they would bettering themselves on a personal level. Based on the ideas of Steven Johnson the average person could learn a thing or two from reality TV. In his article called, “Watching TV Makes You Smarter” Johnson states that; "For decades, we've worked under the assumption that mass culture follows a path declining steadily toward lowest-common-denominator standards, presumably because the "masses" want dumb, simple pleasures and big media companies try to give the masses what they want. But as that 24 episode suggests, the exact opposite is happening: culture is getting more cognitively demanding, not less."(214). Johnson talks explicitly about what a scholar might call the “dumbing down of America”, which in his mind is completely false. Watching reality television in his mind makes a person more aware of the everyday occurrences that happen. The major point first made in Johnsons article is based on his theory called, “The Sleeper Curve”. This theory is about how: “television alters the mental development of young people for the better” (215). Johnson talks about reality TV affecting younger generations in a positive light and helping with personal development. Another major topic discussed is how; “multiple threads in new television episodes are much more complex than old television shows.” In talking about this Johnson refers to the Mary Tyler More show being cookie cutter whereas reality TV today has real life issues. Through this kind of television our younger generation can be taught how to handle tough situations. The third major topic that is brought up in Johnson’s article is about how younger generations are given mindless television that provides them with…

It can enhance ones appearance to have the viewer intrigued and question themselves like “why can’t I look like that”. Instead of getting up and going for a walk or hanging out with friends, television, has us caught up in our homes. Another major media downfall that influences one’s health is the internet. Let’s say I have symptoms of a common cold for weeks that does not go away, I can type in my symptoms on the internet and various options will come out. Now I can assume I have a major medical issue without even consulting with a doctor.…

Ellen Goodman explains how TV affects families in a negative way by using harsh words to emphasize that TV destroys families. She explains through “Primal Screen” that the fact people watch TV is an “addiction” and “the average kid develops that distant, slack-jawed, hypnotic, hooked stare…” (Goodman, 25-26). This explains how kids take TV too seriously in life and take it as a major priority in life. Also, they young kids would create a very bad addiction out of it. Kids in school might not do well because all they think about is TV and get distracted. Another example would be when Goodman states that families have “become an audience and not a family,” (Goodman, 28)”. This means that families sit around a TV and communicate rarely if possible. Families just sit around and ignore each other when the traditional belief of TV is to have family time.…

Television for many people, serves as an aid to relaxation. When the kids come home from a long day at school, Mom comes home from the nursing home, and Dad comes home from selling insurance to extremely rude clients all day, everyone looks forward to the chance to escape the burden of “real life”. Of course, there are channels that don’t completely ruin a person mentally, for example, the news. However, television is mainly entertainment. Watching Channel 7 News report that a man shot up a school full of small children isn’t exactly the last thing someone wants to see or hear before they go to bed. Moreover, watching something like Spongebob taking his driving test and failing it over and over, driving Mrs.Puff insane, gives the family a good laugh. Watching a beloved show, gives everyone a chance to spend quality time together before dealing with the exhausting tasks that come with the following day.…

He tries to make a point on how our social interactions between our friends are dissipating due to our time spent watching television instead. It is not because we dislike our friends though, but it is because we fantasize in living in these characters’ lives. Gabler explains, “But what none of these theories of television has noticed is that TV has learned how to compensate for the increasing alienation it seems to induce. And it compensates not by letting us kill time with ‘friends’ on-screen but by providing us with those nonstop fantasies of friendship, which clearly give us a vicarious pleasure” (317). Gabler implies we could watch television for hours because they provide never ending fantasies of friendship with each television show.…

Having the television right in front of us leaves us with no other choice than to watch it. The moment we decide to turn the TV on and select a channel, we simply shut our brain down. For instance, “You no more challenge your mind by watching these intelligent shows than you challenge your body watching Monday Night Football” (Steven Johnson). Once we are in front of the television, all we can think of is, well, nothing. Most people are so caught up with the show that they don’t even realize the real situations surrounding them. We often tend to use television as a probe to escape reality.…

Television is not the basic programs that were aired even a decade ago. There are now programs called reality television. Maryann Haggerty quoted, “In the blink of an eye, it seems, reality television has become a certifiable global pop-culture phenomenon.” There are currently over 200 reality television shows broadcasting all over the world. Any given subject can be found on television. You can watch a program from cooking, to life of a teen mother. With all the hours spent on watching such shows, I feel television has corrupted the world. I agree that television shows influences our behaviors even without our knowledge of it. Although television seems like a great thing to have, it has many drawbacks. Television can have negative impacts on people, especially kids. People learn new skills by observing, then utilizing it, such as when we were kids and learn to walk by seeing our family walking around or learning a new subject in school. Therefore, when watching television it may influence our fundamental social dispositions; no matter if it is good or bad. Almost ninety nice percent of households possess one television. Television is today’s source of news, stories, legends, and characters from previous centuries; the reason why it is so influential. However, only “0.7 percent is used for public service announcements and news”(Sex, violence, profanity...). The other 97.3 % consists of television shows with violence, crime, advertisements and mainstream blandness. Many studies and research has been done to demonstrate that heavy television viewing may lead to serious health consequences. Television is great for entertainment but has grown into a major problem.…
