The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race It is no secret that agriculture is the primary source of survival for most societies around the world, but it was not always this way. Before the agricultural revolution of the Neolithic Era people were forced to hunt animals and gather plants in order to survive, but farming became a necessity as populations grew. As many progressives see it, agricultural became the primary practice for many civilizations because it was a way to get more food while working less for it. And in early societies, it gave individuals free time to expand their knowledge and social skills. Although agriculture did provide societies with many positives I found it interesting to learn that there were negative effects on these societies as well. The article “The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human,” by Jared Diamond argues that the agricultural revolution was the worst mistake in human development. He believes that agricultural development was not necessary and was actually bad for the human race because it caused poor nutrition, starvation, the spread of infectious disease, and social inequality within societies.

Hunter-gatherers had to obtain their food themselves and this made it every man for himself. In agricultural societies, the elite are able to put themselves above the diseased and the poor. This still happens in many modern societies today. The author also believes that along with social divisions, agriculture causes inequality between the sexes. Women end up bearing and taking care of many children due to needing more hands to help farm or the women in some societies work hard while the men did
