Summary of “To Reunite a Nation” In the article, “To Reunite a Nation” by Patrick J. Buchanan. The author illustrates the points of views of someone who is against immigration. The article begins with the story of Deng Xiaoping during the 1979 interview with President Carter, both leaders debated over Chinese immigration. They both discussed how many immigrants would be good for America? It would make a huge difference if they send a college graduate or illiterate population the United States. The article continues to appreciate all the achievements that were made by immigrants. The speech also praises the Asian-born kids in advanced high school math and science classes and their superior work ethic should be an example for all of us to follow. Other than academics, the article portrays a sense proudness in the contributions that immigrants make in small business and tough jobs, and many of this people show a huge appreciation for freedom that according to the article it makes you proud of being an American. The author arguments, that we no longer struggle to end the divisions between blacks and whites, because now we are trying tackle an ethnic diversity in our nation, and the idea that we are one people has changed. The author quotes many famous personalities that dealt closely with immigration, Al Gore, Barbara Jordan. Al Gore for example according to Buchanan used a national slogan referring to immigration. Barbara Jordan presented her plans for tighter border controls, tougher punishments for businesses that hire illegal aliens, a system to select immigrants and lower the population. Buchanan illustrates how there is major consequences with immigration and education, how immigrants are more likely to lack of a high school education. Furthermore he tells us how more than a quarter lives from some kind of welfare. With all
