Shelby, and a slave trader saying that Mr. Shelby might sale her son, Harry, and Tom. When Eliza tells Mrs. Shelby this she starts crying and Mrs. Shelby comforts Eliza and tell she that her son will not be traded and neither will she or anyone else that behaves well, this calmed Eliza down and she continued her duties. This shows that The Shelby’s are nice people that love and care for their slaves. Then in chapter five Eliza is hiding in a closet and overhears a conversation between Mr and Mrs. Shelby, Mrs. Shelby asks Mr. Shelby who that man is he met with, so Mr. Shelby tells Mrs. Shelby that the man is a slave trader and that he is planning on selling Tom and Harry but only because he owes this man a debt, Mrs. Shelby is upset over this. Eliza is appalled by this and decides to run away to Canada with her son but first she stops by Tom’s cabin and tells him that Mr. Shelby is going to sale him. Tom’s wife, Chloe, urges Tom to run away with Eliza and Harry but Tom says that he cannot betray Mr. Shelby that way, so Eliza leaves with Harry in her arms. When the slave trader is taking Tom away Mrs, Shelby tells Tom that as soon as they get the money she will buy him back. By Tom refusing to run away this shows that the Shelby’s are wonderful people.
One “necessary evil” that exists in society today is government and we tolerate this because a nation needs rules to go by and people to enforce them and without a government to nation would be in complete and utter chaos.
The government is full of evil, greed, and corruption. Presidents lie to their people, they treat each social class differently, making each one pay a different amount of taxes, control what the children in school eat, what the people watch on TV, read in books and magazines and if anyone speaks out “badly” about the government they will be punished and yet they still continue to it “freedom”. The government makes the prices of gas, food and other things people have to have to live causing people to take on more than one job or find other means of getting things they need. The average citizen may have the right to vote but it doesn't count the government already has the person they want in charge picked out, they just want the average citizen to think they have a say in who runs the country. The government enacts laws, good and bad ones, in order to control the people, or make sure they don’t do things they are not supposed too, therefore without the government to place laws in action and keep them in order then the country would be in mass hysteria, not knowing what to do and what not to do. So the government is a necessary evil, because it is corrupted, but without it the people of the nation would not know what to
do.
In Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe it seems that Harriet is trying to show her readers that some slaves where really good people, of course you always have your bad eggs, and that some slaves owners were really nice and cared for their slaves. She also wants her readers to know what the slaves went through and what they were willing to do if they had too. Harriet begins the novel by telling her readers a conversation between a very good, nice and kind slave owner and a slave trader showing that this was a very normal and common thing to talk about. Then she shows how nicely the slave owner talks about the slave he is interested in selling, but he is only selling him because he owes this man a debt. Then she tells her readers about how Mrs. Shelby comforts her maid when her maid, Eliza, believes her son and Tom are going to be traded, but Mrs. Shelby reassures Elza that will not happen, little do they both know how correct Eliza really is. Then Harriet shows what slaves are willing to do when they have to when Eliza finds out how correct she was and runs away with her son after warning Tom. Then George,Eliza’s husband invents a machine to clean hemp and his master gets jealous when George is praised for being smart and takes George out of the factory he was working in and makes him do the lowest chores on the farm. George’s master also beats him and drowned his dog that Eliza gave him, the dog was his only companion, by Harriet telling her audience the story of what happened to George she shows them what some slaves had to go through. Therefore, Harriet Beecher Stowe is trying to show her readers that some slaves where really good people, of course you always have your bad eggs, and that some slaves owners were really nice and cared for their slaves, also she wanted her readers to know what the slaves went through and what they were willing to do if they had too
