Summary Of Wallflowers By Donna Vorreyer
Wallflowers by Donna Vorreyer illustrates one woman’s desire to expand her knowledge of literature. She challenges herself by setting out to use each word that is abandoned in everyday language and literature- “I want to make from for all of them, to be the Ellis Island of diction..” This reveals the overall theme of the poem which is the importance of words. The author truly believes that every word was created for a purpose. The speaker is determined to not only improve her writing but also herself by using uncommon words and diction in her writing.
She describes the unused and abandoned words both as “wide-eyed orphans” and “shy shadows at the high school dance” to symbolize the innocence of the words that have been forgotten. Some words

The judge’s gavel hit the sound block and just like that I had been sold to the highest bidder, or at least it seemed that way. My Aunt was awarded custody of me and I felt abandoned by my mother. As a result of this trauma, I erected imaginary boundaries to prevent that emotional pain and hide that shame from others. I use this boundary as a protection from people, just as the neighbor in “Mending Wall,” emotionally protects himself. Poems by Robert Frost: A Boy’s Will and North of Boston, is a collection of Robert Frost’s poems which he offers both a surface and a deep meaning for readers to infer. In Frost’s poem “Mending Wall,” he states a literal wall damaged by others and nature is being repaired by two neighbors; however, through profound analysis the wall is a symbol in which the neighbor established as a psychological barriers to protect his emotional scars.…

The book and the movie for The Perks of Being a Wallflower are extremely different, and I believe that the movie is much better than the book. The book is written much differently than the movie. There are lots of scenes that are in the book but not in the movie and that are in the movie not the book. The movie focuses less on the bigger, depressing topics than the book does. The characters in the movie are also much different than they are in the book. Their personalities are very different in the movie than the author described them as in the book.…

Throughout history women have represented differently in literature throughout time as the opinions and few of women changed. What started in the early ages as viewing women as objects, property and “do alls” for men, was exhibited in the literature of that time. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is the symbol of the average teenager and their struggles to be accepted amongst others and amongst themselves. Author Stephen Chbosky exemplifies this teen struggle by depicting an introverted and self-deteriorating character named Charlie explains his experiences by writing a series of journal entries to an anonymous source. He begins to write shortly after the tragic suicide of his best friend Michael and explains that he anticipates his first year of Highschool to be solemn one, and at the beginning it did appear to be that way. As time progresses the reader understands Charlie’s main struggle to be accepted and not to feel alone as he has spent most of his life. This wasn’t the first occasion that Charlie…

Queer Studies is a unique discipline, because it really questions the way that each person’s identity frames the way one perceives and views literature. Additionally, sexuality is often considered a private subject, but Queer Studies includes studying sensitive topics which is a reason that makes Queer Studies an interesting discipline. When reading the Queer Studies chapter of Robert Parker’s text, How to Interpret Literature, I could not help but think of the novel and film of The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. I find Perks to be groundbreaking in terms of representing the homophobic cultures that are found in America’s high schools. There are several instances where subject material can be applied to situations within the film, but I found cultural resistance to be prominent theme within the story.…

In "The Perks..." there are a variety of personalities portrayed through the book. Charlie being the "wallflower" of the title, was different from most of the other students at his high school. He understood what most didn 't and didn 't judge anyone for who they are or what they were like; on the contrary, he actually thought about and sometimes asked why they decided to be that way, and there was nothing more to it. Through out the book, entirely composed of letters to an unnamed "friend", he explains how he met eccentric people, like Sam and her step-brother Patrick; two kids a few years older than the at the time freshman Charlie. Sam was Charlie 's first love in the story, he described her as having "unconditional beauty". Patrick was probably Charlie 's best friend. Patrick was first introduced as a strange boy he knew about nicknamed "Nothing", a name he got after other students taunted him and he told them that if they couldn 't call him Patrick they could call them nothing, and it sort of stuck from there. In Charlie 's letters, his siblings, older brother and sister whom he never calls by their name- just "my brother" or "my sister ', appear in certain scenes. Charlie usually has unusual experiences around his sister and he only sees his brother on the TV when he plays football for Penn State University. Charlie also talks about his advanced English teacher, a man whom he named Bill. Bill is never physically described, but he does give Charlie interesting and challenging books and usually asks for a book report. Charlie has asked Bill why he can 't move into a sophmore or junior year and Bill says it does no good for they all do a similar thing. The time period in which Charlie is writing to his "friend", was from August 21,1991 and August 23,1992. Through out that year, Charlie experiences what sex and seduction were really about. He saw how people…

When Charlie originally found out that his sister was hit by her boyfriend he wanted to help her. She told him it was her fault her boyfriend did what he did and she was provoking him. She asked Charlie not to say anything about what happened to their parents. Charlie was confused by this but he did what he was asked. The next day he went to his English teacher Bill, who was like a mentor to him, to discuss the incident that happened the day before. Charlie asked Bill why good people choose bad people for them. After thinking it over Bill replied back to him with something that Charlie said he would always remember and one of the most famous lines in the whole book, "'...we accept the love we think we deserve'"(Chbosky). Charlie later on was talking to Sam after she broke up with Craig. They thought about how she was in a bad relationship but she did really like Craig and and how Patrick is in love with a boy that's too embarrassed to be with Patrick sober, and everyone else who they love that are choosing bad people for themselves. Sam seeking an answer as to why that was happening asked Charlie, "'Why do I and everyone I love pick people who treat us like we're nothing?'"(Chbosky). Charlie then replies back with the same quote Bill told him before and says to her, "'We accept the love we think we deserve.'"(Chbosky). From that quote you can really get a feel for what the theme is. There are a lot of people in this book in relationships were their partner isn't treating them right. They doubt their worth and what they think they deserve. They end up with a person just because they are willing to be with them. They think that they won't find anyone better because wouldn't be good enough for anyone else. they then settle for what they have and stay in a relationship and not for the proper reasons. They are willing to put up with all the bad because they want to be loved. Getting treated unfairly to have love is something they think they deserve when in reality no…
