1. I think Ericsson adopts a confessional strategy by admitting she tells lies to support her thesis that "We lie. We all do." (3). The author begins her narrative with a "lie", "The bank called today and I told them my deposit was in the mail, even though I hadn't written a check yet." (1). By characterizing the lies the author argues that not all lies are necessary bad and often are necessary. I see two major characteristics of lies - with serious consequences that can be harmful to the persons, like “facades lie” and the ones that do more good than the harm the truth would cause, like “white lie”.

1. I believe Tan addresses the reader directly as "you" to represent her personal narrative more close to the audience and also to makes reader feel as a part of her own life.
2. Tan classifying the different kinds of English she knows to make the point that using a different English gives different results and different prospective how the society is excepting someone on base of his/her English.
