The First Encounters In the early 1600’s Europeans were moving to the Americas to start new lives. Europeans encountered many people on their journeys but no one quite like the Indians. The Indians in America at this time were established, wise, and survivors. The Indians were in great shape before the “discovery” of America. However, when Europeans started to move into Indian Territory things became intense. Europeans felt as if they were more successful than the Indians; they pressed their views, trades, and culture upon Indians as if they were rulers of the land. The Indians and Europeans were both stubborn making it essentially harder for these two groups to compromise. However, I believe that there were chances to make the feuds between the groups more peaceful but not everyone was willing to accept. Throughout “What Can You Get By Warre?”, “Your People Only Live Upon Cod”, and “Onondaga Chief Canassatego” we are able to examine why things may not work out so peacefully in the end. Not only did the Europeans come to rule the land and perhaps take over Indians; but they never wanted to compromise with the Indians which made it extremely hard for either of the cultures to truly see eye-to-eye. To me, the Indians seemed as if they were willing to work out some negotiations even if it was “unjust” to their culture. However, the Europeans showed no signs of compromise with the Indians. The Europeans were immigrants to the land yet wanted all their rulings to control the land. It would be very hard for me to picture the two getting along for quite a while. Even today, the European culture rules society and the Indians are left behind. The Indians were the inhabitants of this land but the Europeans claim
