The article “You’ve Got to Find What You Love,” by Steve Jobs, was originally presented to the 2005 graduating class of Stanford University as their commencement speech. As we look back at his speech, after more than a decade has passed, it is clear that the main purpose of it is to promote and persuade individuals to do what you love, or DWYL. Although Jobs may seem inspiring because he commands the reader’s attention with great authority, he only uses his own life experiences as evidence for his claims and does not provide an appropriate level of detail or reference to outside sources. In order for an article to exhibit coverage well it must comprise all details and viewpoints of a subject, and reference other examples for further evidence. Instead of diving fully into the subject of DWYL, Jobs merely skims the surface of a single viewpoint. This viewpoint was his own, in which he provided little evidence, his own life, to support. Say a single man jumped off a bridge and survived, unharmed, would we all then make that same jump? The answer is simple; no, one example just is not enough proof. Jobs does not take the time to provide the audience with more evidence by referencing outside resources. An author must do exactly that if they wish to precisely cover the wide range of information that is required and expected.
