Titles can be tricky to understand. They can have many different meanings and can apply to different situations in the story. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee chooses a few characters that resembles mockingbirds. These people do no wrong but society is against them. People that are “mockingbirds” or simply kind people not always get what they deserve. In the novel Atticus Finch teaches his kids very valuable lesson. As his children, Jem and Scout learn important lecture they begin to mature and understand others. Jem and Scout first learn this lesson when they receive air-rifles from Atticus. Atticus is very cautious and wants to make sure his children and others are safe. “But remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird” (119). The children didn't quite understand what he meant so they asked Miss. Maudie. Miss. Maudie explain to them that it is a sin because the birds do no wrong, they just sing beautifully for people to enjoy. The first one is Tom Robinson. He does nothing wrong but help others. In fact that is how he got in trouble with Ewells. “I was just tryin’ to help her out, suh” (265). He got accused of raping and abusing Mayella. Tom had no intentions on hurting anyone or anything. He was missed judged by the color of his skin and the lies that were told. Mr. Robinson had a family of his own and didn't want to spend the rest of his life locked up. Although he had a good chance of surviving, he wanted to take his own chances and try to escape. “I guess Tom was tired of a whites man’s chances and preferred to take his own” (315). Sadly he had died while trying to escape due to his crippled hand. During the escape the guards shot at him seventeen times which was unnecessary.
