The sun also rises is a book about people that live in France that visit Spain. Most people of the groups have been affected by world war II whether it is physically or mentally. The main characters were named Robert Cohn, Jake Barnes, and brett. Two of the three have been affected by the war.
Robert Cohn was the control group of the book because he was the only one of the group that didn’t go to war. Robert Cohn went to college instead of the war “Oh, cut out the prep-school stuff.”(HEMINGWAY, 47) Robert Cohn was a boxer at Princeton so Robert got to live a normal life like the people that didn’t go to war and he doesn’t represent everyone he probably just represents one person during this duration of time.
Jake Barnes- jake was a combat soldier in the war and in the middle of combat he was injured and he probably had his manhood compromised probably also because he can't get an erection. At the end of the book, Hemingway put a little tease at jake

The Sun Also Rises is a book by Ernest Hemingway. It’s fiction although it takes place during 1924-1926 seven years after World War 1 and the characters in this story were actually real people who were Hemingway's friends (although after the book was released, they were not friends anymore!). The book revolves around Jake Barnes, a veteran who fought in World War I, and the entire story is told from his perspective, we do not get the chance to see what the other characters are actually thinking, only what Jake presumes they are thinking. Since Hemingway was too young to enlist in the United States military he participated in the war as an ambulance driver in Italy. He was seriously wounded by mortar fire and as a result had severe shrapnel wounds to both of his legs. While he was in the hospital he started forming various relationships with the nurses and soldiers.…

In Sundiata: an Epic of Old Mali we learned that war is a necessity in certain cases. War is sometimes required to defend the home or way of life. When people feel threatened, they will rise up and defend themselves. War can result in death and destruction of properties. In some cases, war is used by an aggressor to capture resources. War is also used to affect justice.…

According to the text in “The off-stage protagonist,” “It scared me stiff…. It was the turning point for me. I began to see what people were capable of doing. Where did the Second World War come from? Was it made by something inhuman and alien-or was it made by chaps with eyes and legs and hearts?” “But a sign came down from the world of grown-ups, though at time there was no child awake to read it. There was a sudden bright explosion and corkscrew trail across the sky; then darkness again and stars. The author claims that the war has an affect on people and the group of boys, because they afraid of what is going…

The Sun Also Rises focuses on the aspect of the late 1920s when people were careless about spending excessive amounts of money, time, and ultimately, themselves (they also were not able to handle all the alcohol and partying). Hemingway fixated the readers’ attention on the aimlessness of the generation- that people…

Brett’s values are distorted compared to those of the native women of the city. She lacks direction in life and finds emptiness in many activities that she would have enjoyed when she were younger. Brett values the pleasure of sex before true love and respect and this is why Brett refuses to be with Jake at the beginning of the novel. Brett makes fun of Jake for bringing a date, since he cannot have sex with anyone. Brett thinks that it’s not fair for him to date, because sex is essential for her and she believes that without sex a relationship has no meaning.…

The book explores the wide ranges of American attitude after the war. Uschan claims that the Post-War period was a difficult period of recovery for American society. The book delves into issues such as labor problems, anti-immigrant feelings, racial violence, prohibition, and women's suffrage. It does a great job of introducing the main issues by giving them in almost list form, making it very clear to understand the direct effects. Uschan began his career as a journalist that wrote news and stories for publication so this explains the slight limitation of why the issues are so direct and easy to comprehend, with little deeper understanding. He had to write to get the point across to the public without taking too long to explain so more information could be shared. He even quotes journalism as "history in a hurry" himself. He chose to produce this book as more of a wealth of information rather than…

Ernest Hemingway in “ Soldier’s Home” represents the life of Harold Krebs as an example of the effects on people and communities as well as a country as a whole caused by wars. There appears to be a blatant lack of respect for the main character from family and friends. This lack of respect is shown through the author’s discussion of a lack of empathy, confidence, and lack of placement. Hemingway shows the reader a view of the returning soldier from war and his clear displacement from “home.”…

The Wars by Timothy Findley is at first initially thought, a book about World War I but the pluralized title suggests that it is much more than that. With a closer look it becomes easier to recognize how structurally complex this novel is as it concerns itself around a number of ‘wars’. First, there is the raging war World War I, as well as domestic disputes within the Ross and d’Orsey families while the war rages, although there is still the internal struggle in which most characters face, most notably Robert. One of the most critical themes in this novel is the climatic change both Robert Ross and the society in which he lives undergo, as World War I overturns the past and destroys the fundamental and moral…

Even Fitzgerald would probably think so considering he believed Hemingway was gay. Tyson says, “Fitzgerald was ‘not averse’ to implying that Hemingway was gay,” (Tyson, 353) which means Hemingway might have purposely written Jake as a queer coded character. Jake is a little more obvious than Gatsby and Nick though. Jake’s relationship with his best friend, Bill, for one is very homoerotic and doesn’t follow the homosocial norms. Bill and Jake have quite literally gone on dates and act like a married couple. They sometimes bicker, but usually they get along and are very close. They talk about their feelings with each other which is something that defies Jake’s view of masculinity because men are supposed to be emotionally closed off but he isn’t with Bill. They have even said that they loved each other and while there is nothing wrong with saying I love you to your friends, the time period they were in, it would be seen as homoerotic. Therefore, it insinuates that they had romantic feelings for each other. Bill tells Jake, “You’re a hell of a good guy, and I’m fonder of you than anybody on earth. I couldn’t tell you that in New York. It’d mean I’m a faggot,” (Hemingway, 61). So, that already shows that Bill has some rooted fear of being seen as gay, but he doesn’t really seem to care if Jake thinks that because he outright tells him he likes him. Jake and Bill both have…

A central character of Ernest Hemingway's novel, The Sun Also Rises is Jake Barnes. He is a man of complex personality--compelling, powerful, restrained, bitter, pathetic, extraordinarily ordinary yet totally human. His character swings from one end of the psychological spectrum to the other end. He has complex personality, a World War I veteran turned as a journalist, living in Paris. To the world, he is very self-control but breaks down easily when alone, plagued by self-doubt and fears of inadequacy. He is at home in the company of friends in the society where he belongs, but he sees himself as someone from the outside looking in. He is not alone, yet he is lonely. In describing his friends and events that he participates in, Jake implicitly reveal his thoughts and feelings to the reader. Before the novel actually began, there are some pieces Jake hasn’t revealed to the reader that forms Jake’s character. Even though, Jake doesn’t say so directly, he was a soldier in World War I who was wounded. As a result, he has lost the ability to have sex.…

The story “Soldier’s Home” by Ernest Hemingway brought to life the trauma of return into one’s old life. The story was told from a third-point of view and its main character was Harold Krebs, a young man who had recently returned from the war. The story took place in Krebs hometown in Oklahoma. The central theme of the story was the change Harold made during his permanence in war. Through out the story, readers could assume that Harold Krebs left his hometown being one man and came back being another one. The author introduced Krebs as a man changed socially and emotionally. At the beginning of the story the writer described a picture in which he was in college with his fraternity brothers, which made me assume that previous to the war Harold had friends and a social life. However, Hemingway did not reveal so much information about Krebs’ life before going to war and that let me with the intrigue of knowing more about Krebs.…
