1. How do you map current status of the Sunwind and Volvo on the product process matrix?

Sunwind used separate operations to manufacture the products in batches, operations consisted of Fabrication and Assembly and were manufactured in small and large batches.
Some of the examples of such operations are :
1. Individual parts such as wooden battens, shaped ply woods , steel parts were manufactured in batches of 2500.
2 The process of carpeting glued and folded onto the plywood units was carried out in a batch of 500.
Product Process Matrix for Sunwind: Volvo used an Assembly line Process for its Torslanda, Ghent and Kalmar plant .
At Torslanda and Ghent , Traditional assembly line was implemented while at Kalmar Team zone method was used in which each team of workers had responsibility for assembling an entire subsystem within the vehicle. There were 20 such team zones.

2. Draw the schematic flow diagram for Sunwind and all Volvo plants. (Draw at abstract level not detailed level). Provides detail of distances and demand
(quantity based on 1987 forecast) flow.

130Km

8Km

From the forecast of 1987 we see that the total demand across the three plants of Volvo: Torslanda, Kalmer, and Ghent is 65000 units. We assume that as Save is close by to Torslanda the entire lot is first shipped to Torslanda and then from there the respective requirement’s of Kalmer and Ghent is passed on. There is no information on the distances of the other locations of Volvo hence we consider only Torslanda as we know that it is 8Km from Save.

3. What are the challenges facing Sunwind? Do they need a change in strategy

Since the beginning the team decided to try an aggressive strategy to win the game, assuming a riskier position with higher potential benefits and costs. For that, it was necessary to identify key parameters of the process and design a dashboard to analyze the information and make decisions in a faster way. The key parameters we started monitoring were demand (jobs accepted), stations utilization and lead times of the entire process. The first goal was to balance the line and satisfying the demand.…

A Ford car contains about five thousand parts—that is counting screws, nuts, and all. Some of the parts are fairly bulky and others are almost the size of watch parts. In our first assembling we simply started to put a car together at a spot on the floor and workmen brought to it the parts as they were needed in exactly the same way that one builds a house. When we started to make parts it was natural to create a single department of the factory to make that part, but usually one workman performed all of the operations necessary on a small part. The rapid press of production made it necessary to devise plans of production that would avoid having the workers falling over one another….…

The problem basically consists of finding the optimum set of routes that represent the lowest possible total cost and/or total travel time. The plant is dealing with the repositioning of trucks to serve its supply demand and determining a number of transportation units that optimally balance supply requirements against the cost of maintaining the transportation units. In order to increase truck utilization and achieve better performance, the plant has to adequately and efficiently ensure the scheduling of a steady supply of hogs.…

Alistair Wu has requested that I look at what the lowest shipping schedule and cost can be based on data that he has provided. He wants to know what the lowest possible cost of shipping will can be. Mr. Wu is also considering increasing production at the Shanghai factory from 1,300 to 2,800 units, and wants to ensure that this growth will be an affordable choice. The first chart that was given lists the factory capacity and what each warehouse demand is. The second chart lists the price of shipping from each factory to each warehouse. The chart looks at the demand in the warehouses as well as the cost to ship there from each factory. It then generates a cost effective shipping plan to ship products to the warehouse with least shipping expense and fills those warehouses first. It then allocates additional products to other warehouses that have higher shipping prices. This is evident with Shuzworld H and Shuzworld F, the program ships the most products to the lower priced warehouses 1 and 3. Warehouse 1 need 2,500 units but Shuzworld F only produces 2,200 units. That means Warehouse 1 will take all off the units from Shuzworld F and still have a demand of 300 units. Warehouse needs 1,800 units and Shuzworld H produces 2,300 units. This means Warehouse 3 will receive all of its units from Shuzworld H and Shuzworld H will still have an excess of 500 units.…
