The Dawn of Superman and…the Dead?
The year 1978 was an excellent year for film. Some notable movie titles that are still popular today are; the peppy musical Grease, The first Halloween movie, which has had numerous remakes and sequels the most recent having been released in 2009. Along with these classics there were two that stand out, Superman: The Movie and The Dawn of the Dead. Both these movies have survived into the twenty first century, becoming icons of the 1970's in both cultural significance and as a demonstration of the technological advances of the time. The Dawn of the Dead was the second film in director George A Romero's Living Dead series. In the post-apocalyptic world the dead are reanimated and are driven to feast on human flesh, much to the distress of those humans who trying to survive in this hostile world. This horror film follows a helicopter flying traffic reporter Stephan, his girlfriend, Francine (who is very early in a pregnancy of their love child.), and two gun touting S.W.A.T team members, Roger and Peter. One of the notable quotes from the movie is when Francine Parker and Stephen are watching the hoard of the undead shuffling around the mall when Francine poses the question, "What are they doing? Why do they come here? to which Stephan responds "Some Kind of instinct. Memory of what they used to do. This was an important place in their lives. It is an interesting concept that shopping was such an important part of their culture that they would instinctively go there in death. Later in the film there is a montage scene of the protagonists running through the abandoned stores collecting necessities and luxury item alike.
