This whole idea of MADD started years ago when Candy Lightner’s daughter Cari, was walking with her friend and was struck and killed by a man who left the scene of the accident, and was drunk driving. After she was told that he actually was only out of jail for two days after being arrested for another hit- and- run drunk- driving crash. His record had reflected three other arrests-two resulted in convictions and one was reduced to a reckless driving offense. It was soon after this that Candy Lightner and a few friends started MADD to fight against drunk drivers. The first chapter that was started in Maryland was by another woman named Cindi Lamb who was trying to fight the fact that her five month old daughter became paralyzed by a repeat drunk driver offender as well. The two women were brought together by a press secretary to congress and had a news conference that brought a lot of attention to this impaired-driving problem that is everywhere. Soon all over the nation Candy Lightner was contacted to comment on high profile cases. This lobbying group was incorporated in 1980 as a California corporation.” By June of 1981 it had achieved IRS tax-free status: later in the year, it received$100,000 in private funds.” Articles on the organization appeared in many magazines and newspapers…

MADD does however ensure that laws and policies regarding underage drinking, and drunk driving are obeyed. A law that MADD does back is the underage drinking law, but then they are going against another policy they enforce, the marketing of safe ride programs. The group supports the use of non-drinking drivers, designated drivers and public transportation, but when it comes to underage drinkers, supporting those options for underage drinkers goes against what they enforce the illegality of underage drinking. Another law MADD supports is the enforcement and prosecution of the DUID (Driving Under the Influence) laws. Those who are detained and found guilty of DUID receive similar punishments as those with DUIs, depending on severity of the…

Social prejudice and negative perceptions of survivors of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) exist. There is a bias, though subtle and underlying, against people with disabilities especially those with closed head injuries. Although there are no obviously visible physical signs, there are disabilities that are not evident of the injury. Thus, it is human nature to “judge a book by its cover,” especially when there is already a preset image of the disabled. There are several questions and/or comments usually made about people with TBI; “they look ok,” “are you retarded?” (A question that was asked after hearing the disabled person speak), “Well, you’re working and doing the same thing before the accident; that means you’re better and no longer have a brain injury and don’t really need any more medical assistance.” These are some of the blatant negative perceptions that are presented to someone with a TBI. What the general (normal) population does not consider is the long-term effects of TBI on the individual.…

Candace Lynne Lightner, also known as Candy Lightner, is well recognized as being the founder of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) (Overbey, 2006). Having been born in the year 1946 in Pasadena, California, Candace graduated from high school and proceeded to enroll in American River College in Sacramento where she also graduated (Lerner, 2011). She later married Steve Lightner and went on to have three children. When her daughter was an infant, Lightner’s car was involved in an accident where it was rammed into from behind by a drunken driver. Fortunately, Serena, the daughter, suffered minor injuries. However, six years down the line, Lighter’s son, Travis, was run over and seriously injured where he suffered numerous broken bones in the process (Levinson, 2002). He went into a coma but unfortunately received permanent brain damage. Travis was run over by an unlicensed driver who was impaired by tranquilizers while driving and what is perhaps most shocking is the fact that the driver did not receive a single ticket following the accident (Overbey, 2006).…

The MADD, or Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is an organization founded by Candace Lynne Lightner in 1980, when her daughter was killed in a drunk driving accident. My husband, and many clients at the Sarnia Lambton Brain Injury Association that I was on the Board of Directors for, were unable to access appropriate services in order to attain diagnosis or treatment. Barriers to accessing diagnosis and treatment included such a lack of guidelines for immediate treatment of ABI victims, a lack of tools and often, the regulations of the adversarial automobile insurance industry.…
