Non-Profit Organizations In The United States
In the United States, there are many different types of non-profit organizations. These organizations help with many things, like building homes, protecting wildlife and animals, and giving people food. These organizations are also made to help enforce some of the laws. Without organizations like MADD, ASPCA, and Habitat for Humanity, our community would be worse than it is now. The MADD, or Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is an organization founded by Candace Lynne Lightner in 1980, when her daughter was killed in a drunk driving accident. Mrs. Candace was furious when she found out that the person that hit and killed her daughter wouldn’t spend a significant time in jail. When this happened, not only did he serve twenty-one months in jail, but the drinking age was then raised to twenty-one years old. Since this group has been created, it has help bring down the death toll from DUI’s by a whole lot. The MADD have made a mission statement, it says, “To end drunk driving, help fight drunk related driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and to prevent underage drinking” (www.madd.org). The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal, or the ASPCA, was created to help stop the cruelty to animals and to find them a good home and a loving, caring family. Henry Bergh created this organization stating that it is, “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States” (Henry Bergh). Animal cruelty has risen in the United States, and organizations like this are there to help stop this from happening. Animals are being taken from people who abuse them, hurt them, and don’t love them properly, and they are given a proper home, with a loving and caring family. In the United States there are many families, friends and loved ones without homes, either because they were kicked out, it was repossessed, or a natural disaster destroyed the house.
To help these families, the Habitat for Humanity was founded by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1976. This group is an independent, nonprofit organization, not a government arm. The couple that founded this company had many volunteers, including President Jimmy Carter and his wife. The Habitat for Humanity has a great mission statement, it says that they are, “Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope”

Nonprofit organizations help our communities thrive, it brings people together to make others happy, brings loved ones together, and helps give people services and goods that they aren’t able to afford or that they can’t get because of other reasons. Nonprofit organizations are created not for the profit or money, but for the purpose of serving a public or mutual benefit.
