Sur Sure Thing Sparknotes

Sure thing is a one act play written by David Ives. The setting of Sure thing is very important because it sets the mood for the play. The one act play is set up in a café even though the stage of the one act play and the stage directions is very minimal it is important that the play is set in a café. If it were set up in a restaurant that would be weird, because nobody just randomly sits with a stranger in a restaurant. In Sure thing there are only two characters; Bill and Betty. Bill awkwardly comes up to Betty to ask if he may sit with her and this starts a connection between the two. There is a constant ringing bell while the couple is talking because they keep messing up, but when they mess up the ringing bell starts everything over so they can get things right. Therefore, a question arises about the one act play: Is Sure thing a good drama because it has no plot or real conflict?
In most TV shows, movies, dramas one has a conflict. The conflict is what the TV show, the movie, or the drama in this instance drives off of. The conflict is the base of the story line and without it the drama would be lifeless. Humans drive off of conflict, they love to see what will happen next when the conflict occurs. Sure thing not only has conflict but it also has humor. David Ives shows us every way one can mess things up when meeting someone new. It is something everyone can relate too because we all have messed up when meeting someone new. We find it hilarious how they constantly mess up because we have been in there shoes and it is funny to see someone else mess up constantly.
