You will be assigned a chapter to read from Survival of the Sickest and be expected to answer questions regarding your reading in your own words (do not copy wordforword from the book). 2.

You need to start talking and writing like a biologist. By this, I mean your answers need to use appropriate biological terms and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the key concepts. Incomplete sentences, answers of a single sentence or a few words, answers that just skim the surface

For this assignment, several questions will require answers to be a paragraph or two. A typical paragraph consists of 45 sentences. If you do quality work you will probably write MORE than two paragraphs for a number of your responses. 5. Be sure to use the spell check function before submitting your assignment. Another key skill you will need is to use evidence to support what you claim. In science, your opinion holds very little weight, you must provide evidence to support whatever claim you make in response to a question. This does not mean copy something from the book wordforword.
Whenever
you cite specific evidence or facts from the book that you did not already know, I want you to reference the page number from where you pulled that information in parentheses. EVERY answer will require you to make at least one or two citations. For example, I might make the following claim from the book, thus I will reference the page number as follows: In the 1300s people with hematochromatosis wer more likely to survive and reproduce because of their ironstarved macrophages. This means people with the mutation for hemochromatosis were more likely to pass on the defective gene to their children. So generation after generation, more and more people had the gene for hematochromatosis and possibly explains why the plague died out by

Chapter 1 Ironing it Out Read pages 122 1. Define hemochromatosis and explain what conditions it can lead to. hemochromatosis The
condition in which an organism contains too much iron in their body. Many cells contain too much iron so other body cells may be deprived of iron, surprisingly.
A person can develop a couple diseases such as tuberculosis because it can use the iron from the macrophages.
2. Explain why the presence of oxygen is crucial to living lings. What does it do and how does our body protect itself from invading bacteria stealing it for its own purposes? Organisms use oxygen and mix it with food to make energy. It is also vital for photosynthesis in plants and cell respiration.

In chapter one it talks about how hemachromatosis is a hereditary disease and it’s the most common genetic disease for people of European descent, in which the body can't register that it has enough iron. So it keeps absorbing as much of it as possible, and this can have very, serious side effects (including death). Iron is very important for bacteria, cancer, and other things to grow. The way this disease is most easily treated is blood letting. Looks like all those crazy blood-letting, leech-sticking doctors weren't mistreating everyone. What is the author's argument for why this disease stuck around? To really simplify things: during the black plague in Europe, people with more iron in their system were more likely to die because bacteria feeds on iron. Women, children, and the elderly were less targeted than men. But people with hemachromatosis also happen to have white immune system blood cells with considerably less iron than the normal person, and this counteracted the precise way that the bubonic plague killed its victims - through their own immune system. Therefore, their immune system was actually able to fight off the bubonic plague, allowing them to live while 1/3 - 1/4 of the population died off. Even though hemachromatosis will eventually overload your system with iron, unabated, and cause you to die, it will save your life against normal infections. On the other hand, anemia has evolved because not having enough iron in your system means that it is hard for bacteria to live. While we do need iron, anemia has helped many populations avoid things like malaria.…
