Is bullying a normal part of life? Bullying, a serious problem with many significant effects, impacts people in numerous ways. Susan P. Limber writes in the Encyclopedia of Social Psychology, “Bullying can affect the mental and physical health of children, as well as their academic work. Bullied children are more likely than their nonbullied peers to be anxious, suffer from low self-esteem, be depressed, and to think of taking their own lives. They also are more likely than other children to experience a variety of health problems, such as headaches, stomach pain, tension, fatigue, sleep problems, and decreases in appetite” (131-132). This act can be noticed or felt immediately. When one child calls another an unkind name, the victim might start to cry. A broken bone might result from a punch to the face or arm. However, some of the effects of bullying are not always evident to the naked eye. The results of bullying might appear over time, while wounding a person in profound ways for the long term. Many effects of bullying are impossible to predict or count. With all the different ways to use the internet today, people have even more opportunities to intimidate through cyberbullying: by sending foul pictures, posting false web pages, or insulting messages. Every form of bullying can cause harm to the victim. Bullies may allow themselves to think that giving sneers, calling names, and shoving a student into the wall is just a game. The people who are bullied may actually hate themselves and feel insecure, and fear that every action will result with some form of a negative consequence.
