The first one I noticed was this comparison, “The hour was as dismal as itself.”, I found this to be mysterious due to the fact that this was quoted while Ichabod was departing from his enemy, Bram
Bone’s party. This was previous to when he disappeared, during his walk home in the middle of the evening. He is stating that the time is unfortunate and down, also in the story it was stated that the headless horseman’s appearances occurred at dusk. This makes me suspicious and leads me to believe that an event will occur that is negative. This alone makes me curious.
Where as the opposing story dragged on it certain places. Many will argue that, “The Cask of Amontillado,” held peoples attention easily and had more improved examples of suspense. An equally important point to consider is its use of metaphors and the fact that this has a better chance of fitting peoples wants in a suspenseful genre.
