Sustainable Fashion: What Is Sustainability?
What is sustainability? Sustainability refers to the use of energy and keeping everything together. We control energy using sustainability, and we use it everyday in our daily lives. In the article we read in class called, “Sustainable Fashion” they talked about how cotton wasn’t a good choice as a fabric because of all the resources wasted in order to make it. Thus, wanting to find a better resource we could make fabric from that wouldn’t be as wasteful. American’s spend many resources growing, caring, and making fabric from cotton. Most of which is wasting resources, for example, “Americans threw away an estimated 13.1 million pounds of clothing in 2010”. They waste many resources such as; fuel to ship it, energy, water, and insecticides.
“5.3% of solid waste that is made it in the U.S. landfills that year”, showing how much waste we threw away into the Earth. This being shows how much we wasted those resources for nothing just to put it in the earth to further contaminate it. Not only do we abuse resources but also they can harm the Earth. The article also refers to the Earth as where it takes place. There are some eco-friendly fabrics out there today that we substitute for cotton, because it is a better for athletics and other things and does not absorb as much water. “A wide array of natural fibers-some old, some new-have become increasingly popular with consumers and manufactures, including wool, silk, jute, corn, flax, and soy”, this further proves my previous statement referring to substitutes used. They have other produces like nylon and polyester, which most people tend to avoid, but they are made in a eco-friendly environment as well. That being said it’s not just environmental but it is also about “being fair to fellow human beings”. That being said they want more of a safe product for people to have in their homes. In conclusion, sustainability gives us a foundation to living happy healthy lives. Such as keeping the people safe, and not abusing needed resources to sustain life. They more eco friendly options than using cotton for clothing, which is also used in the fashion industries to sustain a form of balance. The materials we use also won’t be here forever, so we do need to sustain them in a way so that we don’t run out. All in all, that is my essay on sustainability.
