1. What were the business challenges facing Maruti Suzuki management prior to adopting the oracle suite?

The challenges facing Maruti Suzuki management prior to adopting the oracle suite is India at the time was one of the largest car markets in the world and Maruti Suzuki was the leader of that market. Maruti Suzuki then began diversifying their market by adding financing, leasing, insurance and pre-own car business to it. Due to the size and complexity of their organization, Maruti Suzuki was having a difficult time maintaining their explosive growth and was not able to efficiently managed their information management systems. Part of their challenge stems from the fact that a lot of their information systems came local home-grown systems in India and they were not able to communicate in sync which each other leading Maruti to have extra staff in order to coordinate data.

2. What advantages does Maruti Suzuki derive from working with a single vendor, Oracle? What are the possible risks of working with a single vendor?

The advantages that Maruti Suzuki derive from working with a single vendor is when buying information systems, they will have a unified software that will be able to communicate and cut out the need for additional staff for coordinating data. Oracle also has a consulting service that can provide Maruti Suzuki managers with any information or knowledge during the implementation in order to have the transition smoothly switch over from the old information system without any interruptions. The possible risk of working with a single vendor is that you becoming totally dependent on their services. If down the road you find out that their product is not exactly what you wanted the cost of having to switch things out can be quite expensive. Not to mention the single vendor can also raises their fees over time since you are already bought into their program you don’t have much choice but to pay the new prices or risk interruptions

    In the poem “Icarus,” Christine Hemp uses literary devices to convey that a father-son relationship can be problematic. Hemp pulls a twist on the original myth, and retells it in Icarus’ point of view. Her version of the myth shows that Icarus wasn’t very fond of his father Daedalus; however Daedalus didn’t realize that Icarus wanted to be free. “bound by the string…for years to untie TO I didn’t know…to return” (#14 and 15 TO 16 and 17) This quote portrays the emotion Icarus feels towards his father by the use of irony. At this point, the reader understands that Icarus had to deal with Daedalus with only the hope of exiting the prison, but once free he longs to be away from his father. Christine Hemp threw a new strand of emotion into the mix by showing that Icarus wanted to be free; as doing so, he caused a catastrophe. “Poor Daedalus, his mouth an O below, his hands outstretched to catch the rain…” (#18 and 19) This excerpt shows diction, which illustrates Daedalus’ innocence with the words ‘poor’ and ‘O below’. Hemp also tried to show the difference between Icarus and Daedalus by using asyndeton. “my clumsiness with figures, father’s calm impatience, cool logic, interminable devising.” (#8 and 9) This shows Icarus’ reasons as to why he doesn’t like Daedalus, and why he tries to be better than his father. Since Daedalus is clueless, he couldn’t prevent Icarus’ death; now the reader can infer that Daedalus will have a life of sorrow and regret, without knowing the truth. Hemp’s use of the devices diction, irony, and asyndeton help the reader further understand the myth in a way the original myth couldn’t.…

    In his essay The Pain of Animals, David Suzuki incorporated a lot of anecdotes in order to achieve the purpose of his text: inform people that animals can also feel pain just as humans do. The story that I hang the more with is when Mr. Suzuki talks about the trapped squirrel and that it screamed really hard because of the human chasing him at the bottom of the tree. I can relate to it because I once did the same with some friends when I was younger. When I think about it, it was not right what I was doing just as Mr. Suzuki says. David Suzuki is really smart, in this paper he wrote: ‘’ our ability to empathize with other people and living things is one of our endearing qualities’’. In the same paper, he can use his own quote by telling the anecdote about the squirrel and the fish to make us feel empathic about animals which works really well.…
