SVAD111 Session 1 Project
Name:

For this project you will be downloading some software to examine your system then evaluating the answers in the review questions.

Item 1
A) Do Activity 1-1 on page 11 of the Hands-On Virtual Computing book
B) When you have run the software and see the results screen, do a screen shot of the results and paste here:

C) What does that screen shot tell you about your system? Does your system support hardware virtualization?

This screen lists details about my laptop’s CPU. I can see features that my CPU is capable of, and my CPU does support hardware virtualization.

Item 2:
Now go to the chapter review questions on page 30 t0 32 of your Hands-On Virtual Computing book. For questions 1 through 10 identify the correct answer below, then EXPLAIN WHY the other answers are wrong.
1. When using virtualization software to run a virtual machine, the virtual machine’s hard disk is which of the following?
a. A separate partition of the host computer’s hard drive
b. A folder on the host OS
c. A file on the host computer’s hard drive
d. Stored in the virtualization software in a hidden directory

The virtual machine’s hard disk is a file called the virtual disk file. By using a file stored on the host system you can have multiple virtual machines without creating a partition for each machine. You may want to move a virtual machine from one host to another, so a hidden file would not be a useful option.

2. Virtualization software runs within the OS of a physical computer that’s referred to as which of the following?
a. Guest computer
b. Host computer
c. Virtual machine
d. Master system

The PC that runs the virtualization software is the host because it is running within that systems OS. The emulated computer environment is the virtual machine, and when an OS is put on the virtual machine it is then referred to as a guest system.

3. Which of the following is the most important limit on the number of virtual machines you can run at once on a physical computer?

    1) Virtualization: virtualization uses a special kind of software called a hypervisor. The hypervisor interacts directly with the physical server's CPU and disk space. It serves as a platform for the virtual servers' operating systems. The hypervisor keeps each virtual server completely independent and unaware of the other virtual servers running on the physical machine. Each guest server runs on its own OS -- even have one guest running on Linux and another on Windows.…

1.2 Virtualization In computing, the creation of a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, such as a hardware platform, operating system, a storage device or network resources is known as Virtualization. Virtualization can be viewed as part of an overall trend in enterprise IT that includes autonomic computing, a scenario in which the IT environment will be able to manage itself based on perceived activity, and utility computing, in which computer processing power is seen as…

Computers store data ondisks using files, which are structured in specific ways in order to allow for faster access, higher reliability, and to make better use out of the drive's available space. The specific way in which files are stored on a disk is called a file system, and enables files to have names and attributes. It also allows them to be stored in a hierarchy of directories or folders arranged in a directory tree.…

Virtualization allows multiple operating system instances to run concurrently on a single computer; it is a means of separating hardware from a single operating system. Each “guest” OS is managed by a Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM), also known as a hypervisor. Because the virtualization system sits between the guest and the hardware, it can control the guests’ use of CPU, memory, and storage, even allowing a guest OS to migrate from one machine to another.…

Before discussing the different categories of virtualization in detail, it is useful to define the term in the abstract sense. Wikipedia uses the following definition: “In computing, virtualization is a broad term that refers to the abstraction of computer resources. Virtualization hides the physical characteristics of computing resources from their users, be they applications, or end users. This includes making a single physical resource (such as a server, an operating system, an application, or storage device) appear to function as multiple virtual resources; it can also include making multiple physical resources (such as storage devices or servers) appear as a single virtual resource...”…
