There are many people that have difficulties with sleep and many studies that psychologists have researched to help explain this human behavior. In this assignment you will have the opportunity to do a study of your own on yourself!…
In 1962, The Dreamettes, a hopeful girl group from Chicago, enter the famous Amateur Night talent competition at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York ("I'm Lookin' for Something", "Goin' Downtown", "Takin' the Long Way Home"). The group is composed of full-figured lead singer Effie White and best friends, Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson. For the contest, the Dreamettes sing "Move (You're Steppin' on My Heart)", a song written by Effie's brother, C.C., who accompanies them to the talent show. Unfortunately, they lose the talent show, but backstage, the girls and C.C. meet Curtis Taylor, Jr., a used-car salesman who becomes the Dreamettes' manager.…
In Sleep Debt and the Mortgaged Mind, William Dement discusses how to recognize the signs of dangerous sleepiness and urges the importance of education on sleep debt.…
Due to globalization, competition for jobs as well as pursing academic excellence, people are sleeping way shorter than what their ancestors did centuries ago. People slept routinely for 8-9hours a day in the past, however people are averaging less than 6hours of sleep per day (Park, 2009).…
As a second year Bachelors of Science student at the University of the Fraser Valley I have observed that juggling school, work and a social life can be quite difficult. It is interesting to see that many university students who have the appropriate sleep before an exam score moderately higher than those who lack proper sleep. Most students procrastinate and end up pulling "all nighters" the night before and exam praying that they will pass, but maybe a good night sleep would do just the same as staying up all night. I have chosen this topic because this issue effects me directly as a student and is a vastly relatable subject. Acquiring proper sleep is important in more aspects than just scoring higher on exams; it affects the health of an individual and the stability of the mind. Getting the right amount of sleep is an easy change that an individual can make to their lifestyle, which will provide various benefits to them.…
Sweet Dreams, Inc. (SDI) manufactures mattresses and box springs and sells them primarily to furniture retailers and large hotel chains. Problems began with the recession of the early 90’s, demand was low- so they dropped their prices, but also increased production in anticipation of a bounce-back in sales and to realize greater economies of scale. Sales increased-but not as much as they expected…Management remained confident that the economy would continue to grow stronger, so they kept producing and increasing inventories. Management’s response to the economic downturn did not turn out as expected…due to the pressure of where they stood SDI decided to be more lenient on their credit standards…
Due to our chaotic lives in school and at work we often neglect in getting the adequate amount of sleep at night. Proper amount of sleep helps with our growth, development and function. It is imperative the public becomes aware of the general health benefits and side effects of adequate and inadequate sleep.…
Participants interviewed claim to maintain regular sleep schedules with adult members getting 7 hours of hours of sleep each night, and children getting approximately 9 hours per night. Younger children still take daily naps to ensure emotional well-being. The mother denies the use of sleep aids, but the father does require their use at times. He travels often in his job and the frequent changes in physical location make it hard to get adequate sleep. A risk diagnosis of risk for sleep deprivation, along with an actual diagnosis for sleep pattern disturbance (Weber, 2005, p. 580) is identified in this pattern. A proposed intervention for these diagnosis’ would be to establish a bedtime routine to promote circadian rhythm of the effected…
In my self-directed behavioral change project, I encountered a lot of difficult challenges and obstacles in reaching my ultimate goal: a better night’s sleep. My goals for this behavioral change project were to establish a proper sleep and bedtime regimen, getting a full-night’s rest and ultimately feeling more alert and energetic through the day. My main goals were to improve my sleep cycle/regimen by getting the necessary eight hours of sleep I need every night and waking up in the morning feeling fully rested and not sleepy, tired, or groggy at all. This is what I set out to do and I recorded all the times I went to bed, times I’d fall asleep, times I’d wake up in the middle of the night, and times I’d wake up next morning. I recorded all of my observations and occurrences for two weeks and noticed some positive change in my bed-time pattern. I was able to get the necessary eight hours of sleep every night and felt a difference the next day.…
Many of us try to sleep as little as possible—or feel like we have should. There are so many things that seem more interesting or important than getting a few more hours of sleep, but just as exercise and nutrition are essential for optimal health and happiness, so is sleep. The quality of your sleep directly affects the quality of your waking life, including your mental sharpness, productivity, emotional balance, creativity, physical vitality, and even your weight. No other activity delivers so many benefits with so little effort!…
There are “roughly 64 million insomniacs in the United States” (Chamberlin, 2008). People who suffer with insomnia often have a hard time “falling asleep, staying asleep, and/or waking up too early” (Dowdell & Huffman, 2014, p. 162). There are, however, ways to treat this disorder so the people who suffer with it can rest a little bit better at night. Jack Edinger, psychologist at Duke University, uses cognitive behavioral therapy as his main way to help treat his patients and get them back to sleeping normally. Through this therapy, he helps patients understand how much sleep they need and how they can become calm before going to sleep.…

The two types of people in the world would have to be…dreamers and realists. Originally, I would have answered dreamers and disbelievers but that puts the two groups on unequal footing – unintentionally giving the disbelievers a negative connotation. After all, who am I to judge those whose feet stay grounded, even within the toughest winds and the strongest rains? Any two groups of people mentioned – they all need each other – they all coexist equally. You cannot have a coffee person without someone drinking tea, a dog owner without a cat owner. We need differences to keep us from expanding, from developing – how can we truly grow without another force making us question our beliefs? Or, giving us a heightened understanding of who we are?…
For the past month, I have had major trouble with getting to sleep on time and staying asleep till the time I am able to get ready and board the bus to school. We all know that sleep plays an important role in our physical health. For example, sleep is involved in the healing and the repairing of our heart and blood vessels. If we don’t get enough sleep, we are at an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. So it’s really bad when I look at the clock and it’s 3 AM, I’m still awake, and I need to be up by 6:30. It’s possible to run on low hours of sleep, but it’s also possible to drive a car that is low on gas. Without adequate sleep, you’re not going to go very far in the day without having…
