Symbolic Interaction Theory Of Prejudice
Two theories about prejudices for a sociological point of view are the assimilation theory and the symbolic interaction theory. The assimilation theory believes that prejudice action can be avoided in the minority group change their ways to ways similar of the dominant group. The symbolic interaction theory points out that prejudice exists because ethnicity is socially constructed and because racial interactions are usually hostile. The psychological theory of social identity is similar to the assimilation theory because at they are both based on group values. However, instead focusing on changing values to match the dominiat group, the social ideninty theroy belives that prejudice exist because people look for the weaknesses of other groups.

But there’s been a resurgence in recent years with police shootings and the Black Lives Matter movement. I’ve read a report about a certain Republican nominee’s supporters attacking Latinos. The recent hispanophobia is like Operation Wetback, the main target are illegals but hispanics in general have been victimized. Another theory my social psychology class gave to possibly explain stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination is the “social identity theory”: people’s self-concept and self-esteem not only derives from their own identity, but also from the status of the groups they feel that they’re a part of. So it’s easier for people to associate positive things with groups that they identify with and negative things with groups that they don’t than vice versa.…

“Causes of Prejudice” by Vincent N. Parrillo examines the psychological causes of prejudice as well as the sociological causes of prejudice. However, the sociological view will be the primary focus of this essay. Parrillo discusses the sociologist Talcott Parsons. Parsons suggested that “both the family and the occupational structure may produce anxieties and insecurities that create frustration.” The family and occupational structures may cause a person to redirect whatever anger they have towards others. There are three sociological theories for the causes of prejudice in the selection. The theories are: socialization, economic competition, and social norms.…

I believe that prejudice will always exist within America. As long as out-groups and competition exist, society will never be moved beyond prejudice. In the article “The Formation of Ingroups,” Gordon Allport, an American Psychologist, claims that Americans will always exist in in-groups. In addition, with in-group, implies the existence of some corresponding out-groups, where prejudice exists. Therefore, Allport’s outstanding point of view claims that prejudice will always exist if there is an out-group present because society will always judge and harass people who do not belong in their in-group. Today, famous English writer Vincent Parillo expresses his theory about why prejudiced acts will continue to exist. In addition, not only have I read prejudice articles and hate crimes toward an out-group, but I have experienced different types of hate crimes.…
