Symbolism In Hills Like White Elephants By Ernest Hemingway
The short story “Hills Like White Elephants” is about a couple that is located in Spain.They are having beer in front of a train station to take the train to Barcelona to Madrid.Throughout the story they argue about whether having the baby or having an abortion which is referenced as a surgery.The boyfriend doesn’t want her to have the baby he tells her that the surgery will be perfectly simple.He tries to persuade her that he knows a lot of people that have done the procedure.He thinks it’s the best thing to do for the both of them.The author Ernest Hemingway uses the literary element of symbolism throughout the story to convey the larger meaning.
The whole story revolved around the elephant.The elephant is important because the woman wanted
to have it she started to value it and she was afraid of having the abortion.While the man though other wise he didn’t want to have this burden and doesn’t want to settle down or get married and if they do have it then he must.The elephant represents the baby and its uselessness in the relationship for the man.It also represents being unwanted which also goes for the guy.He tries to tell her to get the abortion but then supports her if she doesn’t want to do it.
He thinks that they will be alright and happy without the baby.But Jig thinks otherwise she thinks that the baby will provide good towards their relationship and that's why they have a disagreement on the topic. The also drink to make things more easier to talk.
In addition when Jig is looking at the mountains it looked like white elephants so she said.She looked across the hills. The Hills represented her pregnancy because woman's belly are round.The hills can also represent the problem or an obstacle and it’s hard to resolve it.The white elephant represents the innocence and purity of Jigs unborn child.The child is the only innocent thing in the story.One of the parents is trying to get rid of it which is wrong in certain religions or in some peoples morals.The other parent wants it but is persuaded to try get rid of it and have worries about having the baby.They don’t have a really a good communication.
