Symbolism In John Steinbeck's Ind Aff

Ind Aff is a story of two people who are not necessarily in love. The main characters are a female student and her married professor named Peter. They are together in the rainy weather in Sarajevo in a time that parallels Yugoslavia in 1914. The story does not follow the course of a typical “love story” that we think of.
Symbolism in this story can be interpreted many ways. Rain in this story is the very important because in the beginning, the rain represents the sadness between the hidden affair that was going on between the professor and the narrator. Rain in this story also mean the starting of the new like towards the end, when the girl figures out that the professor isn’t what she wants. Then there are the two feet that are imprinted into concrete where the assassin was to take out Franz Ferdinand and his wife that everyone forgets about.
