The narrator doesn't really seem to be bothered when he is asked to lock up his friend's sister, due to his paranoia of the doctors coming to the house to investigate the body. However it is shown that Usher has suspicion that his sister is still alive the whole time while she is locked into the wall. Then in the end of the story it is described by Poe that the crack in the house that is in the beginning of the story that was once just a small crack in beginning becomes enormous. Then after a period of time we can infer that the crack itself probably grows in size; thus the house is less stable in relation to Poe’s metal state. Then after the house collapses it symbolizes the final loss of Poe’s mental stability, in relation, the death of Usher is also a symbol of his loss of mental stability. Furthermore, the walls holding back his sister is his final sense of consciousness being withered away little bits at a time. Just like how she breaks through the walls is sort of figuratively breaking through the line of sanity so-to-speak.
