In “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” the thing that she was wanting in life was validation that she was worth being loved. The underlying of the story is this women that was independent and needs God to let her know that she was worthy of love in the final days, but just like her lover God never showed up. She thought that if she lived her life doing good deeds this would guarantee her that she would find salvation and love in her next life. She took a final deep breath and blew out a candle and in the end all that was left was darkness. There is a lesson to be learned no good deed goes unpunished but only if it is done genuinely and not just doing it for salvation. You can never seek approval of ones self-worth from another person to validate you. Maybe there is not a lesson to be learned and Katherine Porter just wrote a thoughtful story that plays on human weaknesses of self-importance.
