Symbolism In The Play: A Christmas Play

Literary Event I attended the play A Christmas Carol Clarence Brown Theater at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville on Saturday December 5, 2015. This play was a very well put on play. It was about this mean miserable old man named Ebenezer Scrooge that hates Christmas. One night Scrooge was approached by a ghost, and he was told that he would be visited by three different ghost in the next three nights. Then all of a sudden Scrooge fell into a deep sleep. First the ghost of Christmas past visits him, and takes him to revisit his childhood days. Then the next night the ghost of Christmas present visits. This ghost takes him to the Crachit family Christmas, and the son really touched Mr. Scrooge’s heart.

I have seen the movie a couple times, but going to see the play really made me see a lot of things I do not remember seeing in the movie. There was some symbolism used in this play when the ghost of Christmas future takes Scrooge to the gravestone. The gravestone is a symbol of death. That is when scrooge really realizes that he wants to change because he is not ready to die yet. There was also a sign of imagery when the three ghost were used. To me I seen this as an image of death; especially when he fell into that deep sleep. I just found it to be very ironic that they chose the ghost to come talk to him rather than having angels talk to him. The actor that played Scrooge did a very good impression of him. He was very old and grumpy, and he had no Christmas spirit. The difference in the actor before the three ghost came to take him to see his past, present, and future. To the difference after was a huge difference. He played the part of Scrooge very well. I would go see this play again if I could not only did it let me see the things I missed in the play, but it also allowed me to think that I need to be thankful for everything that I have. Also it allowed me to think about how grateful I should be to have such a wonderful Christmas

I think the best scene that illustrates the journey to a new self is when the ghost of Christmas future puts Scrooge in a grave, and makes him have to promise that he will change. First the spirit shows Scrooge the bed where he is laying at the moment. “Tell me what man that was, with the covered face, whom we saw lying dead?” Then the spirit takes Scrooge to his own grave where it starts sinking and Scrooge is falling inside. In the grave, Scrooge makes a promise. “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” “I will not shut out the lessons that they teach.”…

Hey Virginia, there is more than just a Santa Claus. Nowadays, Americans have either forgotten or ignored Christmas traditions put in place over 1500 years ago. They would rather indulge in the gifts and shopping to please their family than sit back and enjoy the holiday. This new mindset has led Christmas, Hanukkah, and other seasonal festivals to lose their religious intent through the past centuries by the hands of both people and markets. The original purpose of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, has been trampled and overshadowed by a marketeer’s interpretation of how to represent the holiday. Santa and snowmen have become the faces of Christmas, instead of the Son…

“The practice of cloud-seeding garnered considerable attention in the run up to the Beijing Olympics.” Jonas had asked the giver why are there no colors. The Giver said, “Our people made that choice, the choice to go to sameness,” (Lowry 95). This describes how in Jonas’s community there is no climate as the community made the choice to have this type of climate control; and this exists in our society today. In The Giver, Jonas finds out that his community doesn’t know what the meaning of color and the feeling of it. Climate control still exists in our world today.…

He remembers how he was rejected, and then he feels regretful and sad for what he had done and what might happen because of him. In the second stave it says, “The school is not quite deserted,” said the Ghost. “A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still” (33). This depicts that Scrooge had no one that really loved him. He didn’t have any real friends or people to talk too. Scrooge thinks about what he has done, and says regretfully, “There was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door last night. I should like to have given him something” (36). This demonstrates that Scrooge knows that he has made mistakes, and is starting to become a better person, with the Ghosts’ help. Scrooge becomes sad, finally thinking about someone other than himself. “Spirit,” said Scrooge, with an interest he had never felt before, “Tell me if Tiny Tim will live.” “I see a vacant seat,” replied the Ghost, “In an old chimney corner, and a crutch without an owner, carefully preserved. If these shadows remain unaltered by the future, the child will die” (65). This shows that Scrooge really does care about other people. He is recognizing his emotions for other people…

I think one of the themes in this book is that in life sometimes someone can have the best intenitons to change people and change a culture, but it doesent work and the person conforms to that life. On the otherhand one reason the person intiontentions of new ideas might not work because that person could possibly be before their time meaning that the person ideas could be great for people in the future, it might not work in the present. In this story if Carol was around during the women’s revolution then her ideas could have been viewed as forward thinking and those ideas could have been used and she could have had a better life and could have felt that what she was doing was worth it in the end but because came earlier the majority of…

A great work of art that has a great impact on my life is the novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickson. The story tells of a cold hearted, selfish business man named Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited by his deceased business partner Jacob Marley and three ghosts on Christmas Eve. Jacob Marley who chained tells Scrooge that he should change his way or he will be punished in the after life. Marley beged for Scrooge to be given a chance to change. The ghost’s job is to persuade Scrooge to change his ways to avoid punishment in the afterlife. The three ghosts show Scrooge past, present, and future events that help Scrooge realize he is wrong and changes Scrooge into a better person. The story has had an impact on my life in many ways. The story taught me that a person’s behavior is a product of their past. If a person is unkind, it is the events that happened in their past that has made them who they are. It’s a reminder that showing compassion toward unkind people can make them a happier. The story has also taught me to treat people with kindness and respect. Lastly the story has taught me to always help the less fortunate because a little kindness can change a person's life.…
