People with PTSD may feel frightened or stressed even when they are no longer in danger. PTSD is caused by genes and brain areas. Scientists are currently focusing on genes that play a role in creating fear memories. A brain structure called the amygdala is responsible for its role in memory, learning, and emotion. Treatments for PTSD include psychotherapy, medications, or both. The person can talk about their problem with a mental health care provider. Exposure therapy, cognitive restructuring, and stress inoculation training are other types of therapy that can help people with PTSD. There are only two medications approved by the FDA to treat PTSD. These are sertraline and paroxetine. Both of the medicines are antidepressants and can also be used to help treat depression. They may help control common symptoms of PTSD such as sadness, worry, and anger.
