Syntax
1). Make some general observations about the syntax. Are the sentences predominately simple or complex? Long or short? What’s the level of formality? Any fragments or run-ons, any stylistic “violations” of the conventions of grammar? Are there any periodic sentences, parallel structures, or other special features?
2) Make comments based on your observations about how the author’s use of syntax creates specific effects.
1. From Moby-Dick, page 1
Call me Ishmael. Some years ago—never mind how long, precisely—having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen, and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off—then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me.
2. From The Shipping News, page103
Quoyle woke in the empty room. Grey light. A sound of hammering. His heart. He lay in his sleeping bag in the middle of the floor. The candle on its side. Could smell the wax, smell the pages of the book that lay open beside him, the dust in the floor cracks. Neutral light illumined the window. The hammering again and a bearing shadow in the highest panes. A bird.
He got up and went to it.

Suddenly, a loud scream disrupted the once peaceful scenario. There was a movement in his peripherals, something scrambled into the rusty quonset to his left. Guterson depicts conflicting perspectives on humanity’s response to the ungraspable forces of nature and fate by selectively contrasting Western and Eastern philosophies through Ishmael and Hatsue’s past and values. Ishmael figuratively views life as “one whole ocean”, floating between his inability to “let go” his past “war veteran” and “unconditioned” love memories for Hatsue symbolised in his unwillingness to “denervate” his “amputated arm” to its “stump”. In juxtaposition, Hatsue represents an Eastern perspective considering life and the relationship with Ishmael as an “ocean [that] won’t mix”, separated by racial prejudices from her unavoidable traditional values. Guterson affirms Hatsue’s recognition that “there’s no point perpetually grasping for something” as she symbolically “learn to play her” life “like an instrument” in “harmony”, emphasizing that humans should accept a ‘greater truth’ than individual desires by acknowledging “death, injustice, hardship”, as “part of life”. Guterson then metaphorically summates humans as “dust in…

Schweitzer claims that the sea is a motherly realm; however, like a lover, “the voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation” (Chopin 18). Though Schweitzer and Chopin allude to the sea as possessing competing metaphorical implications, the former makes the intriguing claim that the sea possesses two internal contradictions: a voice which guides one to solitude through a language without words, and a touch which surrounds one in a gentle, loving embrace (Schweitzer…

With the assassination of President Lincoln, the presidency fell upon an old-fashioned southerner named Andrew Johnson. Although an honest and honorable man, Andrew Johnson was one of the most unfortunate Presidents. Over time there has been a controversial debate as to whether Johnson deserved to be impeached, or if it was an unconstitutional attempt by Congress to infringe upon the president's authority. The impeachment of Andrew Johnson was politically motivated. The spirit of the Jacksonian democracy inspired Andrew Johnson. In 1857, Johnson was then elected to represent Tennessee in the US Senate. "While serving in the Senate, Johnson became an advocate of the Homestead Bill, which was opposed by most Southern Democrats and their slave owning, plantation constituents." 1 This issue strained the already tense relations between Johnson and the wealthy planters in western Tennessee. Eventually the party split into regional factions. Johnson made the decision to back the Southern Democratic nominee, John Breckinridge. By this time the rift between Johnson and most Southern Democrats was too deep to heal. The break became final when Johnson allied himself with pro-union Whigs to fight the Secessionist Democrats in his state for several months. 2…

Ahab’s psyche was forever changed while hunting down the elusive white whale. Ahab’s most prominent symptom of his psychological decay was his obsession with Moby Dick. Throughout the novel Ahab expressed a clear obsession with the white whale, but within the text he is found expending a great amount of energy to find the possible locations of the white whale, “Almost every night [the maps] were brought out; almost every night some pencil marks were effaced, and others were substituted. For with the charts of all four oceans before him, Ahab was threading a maze of currents and eddies, with a view to the more certain accomplishment of that monomaniac thought of his soul” (Melville, 207). Clearly showing irrational obsessions as well as dysfunctional cognitions, Ahab is turning to the one thing…

According to Freud’s work and notes Captain Ahab is the Id of the novel, he represents the primitive and instinctive component of the personality. Fueled by revenge Ahab will do anything to kill Moby Dick including endanger his own crew. The id demands immediate satisfaction and Ahab gets his through a mere sighting of the whale, the on water chase is a whole other euphoria to him. At one point he even says regarding the whale, “I have chased you through my mind, through a thousand nightmares” The id craves pleasure and the Captain gets his pleasure through the thrill of the chase therefore he craves the chase. Between Ahab’s childish, primitive desires, and the pleasure it brings him he is without a doubt the id.…

In Moby Dick, Herman Melville makes use of two climactic scenes of the book to underline human nature. The chapters entitled “The Musket” and “The Symphony” are two scenes in which Starbuck and Ahab reveal a critical attribute of man’s temperament. Melville uses these two characters to emphasize that man is unchanging, and in this way their moral fiber determines there fate.…

In the intricate novel of Herman Melville's Moby Dick, the notion of a "universal brotherhood of Man" is introduced in the first fifteen chapters. Melville uses the relationship of Ishmael and Queequeg and the everyday standards of the shipmen to illustrate these ideas. A theme of the novel is the idea of comradeship between human beings, no matter how different. In the following essay, I will analyze and explain this concept by incorporating events that coincide.…
