Death Penalty: Should it be used? “The death penalty is a form of punishment that involves executing a person after he or she has been found guilty of a crime by his or her legal system” (What Is the Death Penalty?). In the United States, our government has established several crimes that are worthy of earning the death penalty sentence. Many people are unaware of what crimes our government have set aside and deemed ‘death penalty worthy’. These crimes include: first degree murder, murder with special circumstances, such as: intentional, multiple, involved with another crime (kidnapping, robbery, burglary, rape, arson), of a law enforcement (police officer, sheriff, deputy, state …show more content…
Some say the Old Testament is not in affect any longer, because we are under the new law, not the old law. Others may argue using Matthew 5:39 in their debate. Jesus was talking to a crowd and said, “If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also” (Zondervan). The opposing side also defends their side by stating Romans 12:19, “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God 's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord” (Zondervan). They proclaim how God commands us not to take revenge, because in the end, it is His responsibility to avenge for wrongdoings. They say that we would be in the wrong for avenging and punishing a criminal for his wrongdoings. Another point that many people use to defend their stance is the Ten Commandments state: “You shall not murder” (Zondervan).
